Perks for the Parents

This minimalist hideaway close to Santa Barbara de Nexe in the Algarve is set at the end of a road lined with gnarled olive, almond and cork trees, and includes a swimming pool, patios and a rooftop terrace. Once a rundown traditional Algarve house, the property has been rebuilt and transformed with modern spaces, seamless flow and large gardens with picture-perfect views. The minimalist interior design, concrete flooring and linear shapes create a beautiful contemporary space. Sunbathe and relax on the rooftop terrace with views of the hills and a nearby nature reserve; spend days at the local sandy beaches, and buy local food from the nearby markets to take home for alfresco dinners on the patio.

Why Kids Love it

Children will love the design and set up at this beautiful villa - along with its location. A crib, high chair and kids DVDs are available. Play on the Algarve’s sandy beaches together, relax by the pool and spend your trip exploring pretty towns and nature reserves nearby. There is plenty of space to play, patios and terraces where they can play and read in the sun or in the shade, and a 15-m pool to swim in. There is a huge shopping mall with a children’s playground 10 minutes away by car; a little further away you can find aqua parks open in the summer, Loulé market for local goodies, and Fonte Benemola where you can walk over stepping stones and little bridges past waterfalls and picnic spots on a walk through a nature reserve. Note that there are a number of ungated, unrailed steps throughout; young children will need a careful eye/ assistance.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights Sunday-Sunday. Except in low season (1st November to 1st March); 3 nights starting any day of the week. Rates include WiFi, meet and greet, and all taxes. Style Notes

Contemporary chic. Once an old ruin at the end of a dirt road, this stunning home is nestled among wildflowers and hundreds of olive, almond and cork trees. Designed by award-winning Pedro Domingos architects, it is dominated by strong lines, white walls and concrete. When the sun is out, it casts beautiful geometric shadows on itself like minimalist paintings. Every line is perfectly juxtaposed, and set in a landscape of gnarled olive trees and dry earth. The interior was designed with local handmade furniture, some Danish design and a lot of local handmade blankets and pottery.

Algarve, Portugal

Beaches, golf and sunshine

If you like golf, sunshine and beaches, you’ll love the Algarve. Portugal’s sunny spot gets 3,000 hours of sunny blue skies every year and entertains far more sun seekers than that on its highly accessible sandy beaches. For an easy beach break from just about everywhere in Europe, look no further. Beyond the beach, kids love the water slides at Aqualand, boat trips and meeting the monkeys at Zoo de Lagos.
