Perks for the Parents

This beautifully designed Amstelveen home with a spacious garden is just 20 minutes from the heart of Amsterdam and faces the Amsterdam forest. The house itself has a grand kitchen with a garden view, a large terrace for long summer evenings and design touches including black and white 1960s photography, parquet flooring, succulents and a huge picture window. A great blend of family living, design, nature and the city, it is in the suburb of Amstelveen, which has a luxurious shopping mall and a superb French bakery. Get the best of the area by throwing yourself into the natural excursions nearby - Amsterdam forest, canoeing, climbing, cycling and running included - and using the provided bikes to cycle to Amsterdam South (a 15-minute ride away).

Why Kids Love it

This house is well set up for kids, with the bonus of a large garden and a location next to the entrance of a park with the Amsterdam forest across the street. The forest has playgrounds, swimming pools, play islands, riding school, sports clubs, a kids farm, and a pancake house just to name a few. The house itself is full of toys including (little) bikes, tennis rackets, badminton, boules, cricket bats, a paddling pool, sand box, huge trampoline with net and more. There is a PlayStation 4, Netflix and DVDs for kids. Nearby there is a small playground. For babies and toddlers, 2 high chairs, a baby bath and a crib can be provided on request. There are 5 bicycles available (1 with a child seat on the back) and one Amsterdam-style ‘bakfiets’.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. Note that for those traveling with smaller children, there is a steep step leading from the TV room to the kitchen; stair gates can be arranged on request. The garden is gated. Both of the children’s bedrooms have a cubby hole play space accessible by rope ladder, suitable for children aged 6 and up. The owners can arrange for cleaning and clean bedding, and fresh towels during a stay on request, along with bread delivery and a catering service. Car rental not essential but can be useful; there are well connected bus and metro links a short walk away. A travel crib and air beds are available on request.

About the Location

The house is in Amstelveen, a residential suburb 15 minutes by bike to the south of Amsterdam Zuid. It is approximately 20 minutes by car from the heart of the city. Schiphol is approximately 15 minutes by taxi from the residence, and it is 10 minutes from Amsterdam Zuid station. There are several metro and bus stops (the bus is a 3-minute walk while the metro is a 15-minute walk / 5 minutes cycle). Both metro and bus take you to Amsterdam centre in under 15 minutes. Nearby you will find Amstelveen mall and lots of small shops offering organic food, along with lots of restaurants.

Accommodation Details

This 5-bedroom corner house has a large garden and a park behind the house as an extended garden. It is set over 4 floors and 260 sqm in total. The ground floor has a large open plan kitchen and lounge-diner area, with a sitting room with fireplace and separate TV room on the first floor. There are 5 bedrooms and a study across the upper 2 floors. The master bedroom has a kingsize bed, walk-in closet, large TV and a bathroom with double shower. Other bedrooms include 1 with a twin bed, another with a bunk bed, one with a toddler bed and another with a queensize bed. Bathrooms have showers and baths.

Style Notes

Designer family. This beautiful contemporary home features modern colours (shades of green and grey and whites), a large glass sliding door to the garden, and beautifully designed living and play spaces. There is a beautiful wooden floor in the sitting room and a huge kitchen with garden view. The kids bedrooms benefit from some playful treatments: decals of labrador puppies in one, and a hidden play space accessed by a rope ladder in another. We love the location for the perfect blend of city and country living, the beautiful kitchen and its diner-style seating, and the family spaces, including a living room with table football.

We are a family of 5 with 2 boys (10 and 8) and one girl (4). We love active holidays with sightseeing and hiking in nature or around beaches. We go skiing every year. We have been to the southern part of Europe and the northern part. Now our youngest is 4, we are also keen to explore other continents. We have stayed in other Kids and Coe houses and we loved them all!

Amstelveen, Amsterdam

On the edge of the city

This small town, 30 minutes south from Amsterdam’s Centraal Station by tram, is a peaceful place to stay as a family. Amstelveen has playgrounds, local parks for rambling, picnicking and soccer, and a handful of modern art museums. Be sure to check out the Clara Maria Cheese and Clog farm and the local sheep and goat farm in the middle of the Amsterdamse Bos park, ideal with young children.
