Perks for the Parents

Set in one of Amsterdam’s most up and coming cultural areas, this stylish and inventive family apartment includes play nooks and plenty of toys. Well-set up for a family stay, it has a full kitchen and a large dining table for family meals, and a family bathroom with shower. The apartment is in close to NDSM, a former shipyard on the banks of the River IJ that has a vibrant artist community and an ever-expanding variety of bars and restaurants.

Why Kids Love it

The apartment is family-friendly and comes with a lot of Lego, a play kitchen and plenty of other toys. There is a high chair and on request, the hosts can arrange a baby bath and crib. Being close to the IJ, there is plenty to see and do for younger kids, especially boats; taking the ferry to the heart of the city is also great fun. There is a range of family-friendly restaurants in the area, including a pizzeria that makes pizzas shaped like Miffy just for kids. It is easy and fun to cycle in the area.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. Max occupancy in the apartment is four people and a baby in a crib. The apartment is safe and secure on the first floor with a elevator and stair entry from street level to the apartment door. There is a parking space in the complex. There is a mezzanine level with stairs but no stair gate. On request the hosts can cover the stairs so children can not go upstairs. Some rooms are accessed by ladder and not suitable for those under 5. House rules: no shoes, no pets. The best way to get around Amsterdam is by public transit: train, tram or bus, or by bike. Bikes can be rented nearby. Car rental is useful if you are planning to go beyond the city. Note there is no TV; the bathroom is shower-only.

About the Location

The residence is in Amsterdam Noord near to NDSM, a former shipyard on the banks of the River IJ. In recent times, the area has blossomed into a cultural hotspot with a vibrant artist community and an ever-expanding variety of bars and restaurants. The area hosts multi-disciplinary festivals, performances, exhibitions, dance parties and a wide range of other events in unique, post-industrial surroundings. Nearby, you will find ferries to Centraal Station (free, and you can take your bike with you) and also Eye Film Museum, which has regular family-friendly screenings. It is approximately 20-minutes’ drive to Amsterdam Schiphol airport.

Accommodation Details

This unique property has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom and is set across 3 areas: 1 one-story area and 2 2-floor towers. The first tower has a children’s bedroom suitable for a toddler on the lower level, and an upper bedroom, accessed by a thin green steel staircase, suitable for those aged 5 and up. The second tower has a bathroom and the master bedroom. The one-story area includes the kitchen, laundry room, and toilet, plus a living room with access to a 40 sqm terrace. There is an upper floor with a meditation room accessed by a steel ladder.

Style Notes

Open and light. This modern apartment has unique modern spaces and plenty of light and space for all the family. Laid out in an innovative style, white walls and wooden floors add Nordic style, while unique living spaces and bedrooms make the most of the square footage. The kids bedrooms are light and fun, with string lights and plenty of color; a pink canopy drapes princess-like over one of the beds. Ladders provide access to some upper spaces - great fun for kids. We love the inventive, playful touches, the owl cushions and the uncluttered living spaces.

We are Ed and Rixt and our two children are Reza and Uma. Ed is a psychologist and teacher and has a yoga studio nearby. I am a designer and have an achitectural and design studio. We live in our beautiful self-designed appartment with terrace garden, situated in Buiksloterham; a new upcoming area in Noord. It’s a relatively quiet area, close to ‘het IJ’. There are some nice playgrounds near our house, and also some great cafés and restaurants within walking distance. The ferries to the city center is only a 5 minute bikeride away.

Rixt's appartment was perfect! It was peaceful, spacious, spotless and best of all, had a mix of toys our two kids were enthralled by the entire space. It's perfectly located on the North-side - only a 20 minute walk to the free, 24/7 ferry that took us handily to the city centre and Centraal Station in 4 minutes. We had one of the best pizzas we've ever eaten a 10 min walk from the apartment and it's great the area is under development for lots of new and exciting places - the calm was appreciated after coming from our home-town of London! Rixt was brilliant at recommending places to see and do before and during our stay and none of us wanted to leave!

Amsterdam-Noord, Amsterdam

From blue collar to white hot

This former industrial neighborhood has become the city's new creative hotspot, where former shipyards have been turned into artists studios and innovative architecture flourishes. It's about 20 minutes from the center of Amsterdam by ferry or car, and has waterfront properties as well as large suburban houses.
