Perks for the Parents

A beautiful farmhouse in the village of Fontvieille, with stunning views of the Alpilles and stylish modernized interiors. It sleeps 11. Retreat to this relaxed residence within walking distance of everything you need (a supermarket, farmer's market, kids playground, kids carousel, hairdresser, bakery, and more). Despite the central location, you’ll feel almost isolated when you're in the house, with the direct views of the mountains and the quiet, serene surroundings. Everything is well set up for food lovers and the kitchen is wide and well equipped, with a kitchenaid with sorbet maker among others to cook with those fresh farmers market ingredients (and in keeping with traditional French cuisine, there is no microwave). The lovely pool (11x4m) has a safety shutter and its own pool house, filled with comfortable sun mattresses as well as 6 Italian sun beds, so you can relax while the kids splash around in the water.

Why Kids Love it

The house is made for kids of all ages. Outside, there is a petanque play area in the garden, trampoline and, of course, the swimming pool. The house faces the beautiful Alpilles mountains so it feels very private and families will love relaxing on the huge Bali-style outdoor beds for daytime naps or quiet reading. The host family has pool games, board games indoors and a children’s bedroom with building blocks and French children’s books. It’s also a great location for families - you can walk around the village without having to drive everywhere and there is a playground for kids just 5 minutes walk from the house next to the Moulin de Daudet. (Parental supervision is required around the pool and trampoline if you’re traveling with younger kids or toddlers).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights during peak season (July & August) with Saturday arrivals; 4 nights other times with arrivals on any day except Sundays. The host can offer a reduced rate for smaller families who wish to book just 3 of the 5 bedrooms - please ask for details. Safety notes: the pool is ungated but has a safety shutter. The house sits at the end of a one way street, away from traffic, so it’s very quiet. Fires are not permitted. There is parking in front of the house for 2 vehicles with an outdoor 220V electric plug for car charging. Any additional cars should be parked on the main road. The small land strip north of the building is not our property - sometimes neighbors use this area for parking and this can only be visible from a few windows. There is a party wall in common with a neighbor, on the west side of the building and separated by a beautiful stone wall. Access to this neighboring house is from another street so it is not intrusive at all. There are 2 sets of stairs from the second floor with no stair gates. There is no air conditioning but there is a floor cooler for the ground floor. The hosts have a great concierge who can organize pre-arrival food shopping, babysitting, special catering, tickets, extra cleaning, and more on request, for an additional fee. They can also provide a high chair and crib if or make any other preparations on request - please ask when booking.

About the Location

The house is located in the heart of Fontvieille, the closest Alpilles town to Arles, for the Rencontres de la Photographie summer photography festival. Fontvieille has a small farmer's market twice a week (Friday and Monday). The areas of Les Baux de Provence and Carrières de Lumière are both 10 minutes away by car; St Remy-de-Provence is also just 15 minutes’ drive. The house has a lot of beautiful hikes and running trails in the surrounding hills, with tracks for all walking levels, even those with smaller children. Avignon and the beaches of Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer are around 40 minutes away, as is river swimming in Collias. For days out with the kids, you can horse ride in Camargue, or visit Wave Island or Spirou amusement park close to Avignon. The nearest airport is Marseille or Montpellier. It’s 25 minutes away from Avignon TGV station or Nîmes Pont du Gard. Arles station is 10 minutes away. The village of Fontvieille is accessible on foot but car rental is necessary to explore the region.

Accommodation Details

The farmhouse has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. Downstairs you’ll find a wide living area and a vast kitchen, with a table for cooking, eating or crafts. The large TV can either face the main living room or be turned around towards the cozy fireplace area, where there are leather couches. The primary bedroom has a kingsize bed, with a ‘boudoir’ room which has 1 single bed. The wide mezzanine bedroom is accessed from the stairs leading up above the living areas, with a double bed, plus a shower room. The two parts of the second floor do not connect; the Mezzanine level is very independent. A further double guest room has its own shower room, close to 2 other bedrooms that are ideal for kids/teens (which can be set up as 2 singles plus 2 singles, or 2 singles plus 1 double). These rooms share a bathroom. There is also 1 single sofabed that can be set up on request.

Style Notes

Old meets new. This beautiful old farmhouse was built in 1790 and renovated in 2019 for modern families. The decor is minimalistic yet cozy, with furniture gathered from vintage stores and the beds hand crafted, made in France with wool mattresses, pillows and quilts. The hosts have kept as many of the original details as possible: they have old local stones on the wall, imperfect tiles on the second floor and irregular chalk paints. Despite these traditional features, they have totally renewed the house to input a new heating system, a floor cooling system at ground floor level and a great fireplace for mid-season and winter times. We love the wisteria arbor in front of the house, which creates beautiful natural shade, as well as the contemporary exposed concrete styling in the kitchen and that amazing stone fireplace.

I started my career in the advertising industry as an agency producer at CLM BBDO. I then evolved as an Executive Producer at GANG FILMS, and for 17 years I've been employed @ DIVISION, one of the leading french production company for commercials. I left this year for a new adventure as an entrepreneur with POSITIVE FILMS. While not working on my new project, I may be found wheel throwing 3kg of clay or challenging myself on a flying trapeze....

It has grown in recent years to be a cultural attraction in Provence, attracting artists to its unique architecture and vibe. A Unesco heritage site, Arles is full of history and is also great location from which to explore neighboring areas of Provence.
