Perks for the Parents

This Brooklyn brownstone has been photographed for Apartment Therapy and is beautifully appointed for families, with stunning decor and plenty of play spaces. The open plan of the parlor floor is great for families and the kitchen is extremely well stocked (from popsicle makers to every kitchen gadget). The backyard makes it easy for the kids to eat and play outside. The extra room on the second floor is great for a nanny or au pair who might be traveling with a family of 3 or for extra visitors. There is an office, ideal for parents who may need to get work done. There is also plenty of space in the office to set up an additional cot or air mattress for visitors and sleepovers. Two great pizza places (one that makes the best pies in all of NYC) are within 10 minutes’ walk, and there are plenty of other great restaurants and cafés nearby.

Why Kids Love it

This family home has a super fun kids bedroom with black and silver space wallpaper, light-up carnival style letters and plenty to play with. There are toys and books (particularly for boys) and plenty of open spaces for indoor play, including a toy-stocked play room. The bedroom has a huge library of books especially great for beginner readers through fourth and fifth graders. The master bathroom has a large family bathroom that has a tub and large shower set up in the same area, so kids can splash and play in the tub and not worry about getting water everywhere. Note that due to a lack of child-proofing, we would recommend it for children over 5. There are several playgrounds within walking distance, and also the Pratt School campus, with lots of room to run around and great outdoor art. Two bikes (1 with training wheels, the other perfect for a 9-11/12 year old) and 2 scooters are available.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 30 days. There are a lot of stairs in the home; stair gates are available on request. Note that the property is not child-proofed and is best for children over 5. The coffee table is made from poured concrete and is very heavy - small children should be supervised near it. Access to the outdoor space is via a door in the lounge which can be locked. The lounge has a large TV with Apple TV and Netflix and there is super high speed WiFi throughout. There is an alarm system. The house will be cleaned by the regular cleaner once a week as part of the stay; she can come more frequently on request for an extra fee and can help make arrangements as necessary. The garden level of the apartment is rented to a quiet, professional couple who will be living here during all rental periods.

About the Location

The property is on the edge of Clinton Hill and Bedford Stuyvesant. Fort Greene is a short walk away, as is Fort Green park and the Brooklyn Flea. The home is on a quiet residential street with plenty of on street parking. It is a short walk to many neighborhood cafes, restaurants and playgrounds, and a quick subway ride on the C train to explore other Brooklyn neighborhoods or reach Manhattan. The residence is a 30-minute ride from JFK and LaGuardia airports. Uber is never more than 7 minutes away. It takes about 45 minutes to get nearly anywhere in Manhattan. The A/C and S are the closest subway; it is also near the G train (to Williamsburg Brooklyn) and a 20 minute walk or 8 minute ride to Atlantic Center/Barclays center for a major subway hub—as well as to the Barclays Center. In the summer and fall, Fort Greene has a great greenmarket and, when the weather is nice, the 30-minute walk and shorter bike ride to Prospect Park is easy and pleasant.

Accommodation Details

This residence comprises the top 3 floors of a Brooklyn brownstone. The top floor has a large master bedroom with a queensize bed, a very large children's room with 2 twin beds and a master bathroom. The middle floor has a full bathroom and 3 rooms: a small playroom, an office and a lounge with TV, video game consoles, and couch that can serve as a double bed. The parlor floor is open plan with a cook's kitchen, counter for casual eating, large dining room table that seats 8 and living room opening to a private deck with dining table and chairs, and shared back yard.

Style Notes

Modern Brownstone. The home has been photographed for an Apartment Therapy book and has plenty of playful touches that chime with the traditional brownstone design elements. It is open plan with a sleek kitchen, custom dining room table and original art throughout. The colors are neutral with walnut wood accents, shades of blue and splashes of red. The master bedroom is serene with a modern, understated look. The children’s room has been photographed for publication and has a lively, whimsical look with light-up carnival letters. We love the accent wallpaper and the inviting family spaces.

Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

Diverse and up-and-coming

Between Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Prospect Heights and Bushwick, Bed-Stu is one of Brooklyn’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods. Expect brownstones on tree-lined streets, sidewalks busy with families and a commute into Midtown that takes around half an hour. In the summer, the diverse community get together at street parties on the block and picnics in the local parks.
