Perks for the Parents

This A-frame home in the woods sleeps up to 11 across 4 bedrooms and is set in a great rural location 2 hours from Washington DC with hiking, hot springs and restaurants nearby. Surrounded by nature and woods, it offers a natural playground for the kids. For those seeking culture, the town of Berkeley Springs has great restaurants and art galleries, plus hot springs. Cacapon State Park, nearby, is ideal for a day hike. There is also great fine dining in the mountains of West Virginia.

Why Kids Love it

The house comes packed with games, movies and, most importantly, space. A pack'n'play and multiple baby gates are available if needed. Kids will love heading off to explore the woods. Downed trees make great balance beams, and there are plenty of hidey holes for dens. In the summer, the community has tennis courts and a pool, and there are all-year hiking trails a short walk from the house. The Cacapon State Park is a short drive away.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. The 2 staircases in the house are steep, but sealed off with baby gates. There is also a wood burning stove for winter. Dogs are welcome - this is a pet-friendly property. The property can be tricky to locate but the hosts will happily help with check in details and complete address/destination details following booking. No smoking inside the house. Refuse must be secured against bears.

About the Location

The residence is a 10-minute drive south of Berkeley Springs in West Virginia. It is a family-friendly location, ideal for a weekend break and just 2 hours from the DC/Baltimore area. Car rental is essential. The town offers its hot springs, art shows and exhibitions, while the beautiful Cacapon State Park is close by. It is a 30 minute drive to Potomac airport or 1 hour to Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport.

Accommodation Details

This is a 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom house over 3 floors. On the middle floor there is a large den with TV, a kitchen with enough space for everyone to gather at once, plus 1 bedroom/bathroom with 2 beds, large enough to handle a set of parents and a toddler. The second den is downstairs with another TV, large reading area and large bedroom with another bathroom. The third floor boasts 2 bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. Outside there is a very large deck with a grill.

Style Notes

Modern rustic. This A-frame cabin looks much smaller from the outside than the inside and includes wood paneling and earthy paintwork help it fit in its natural environment. Double height ceilings add light and space while cozy bedrooms make use of sloping and lower height ceilings. The 2 dens offer plenty of space for a large group to relax together or separately. We love the sensational location, the unique set-up and the deck for outdoor dining with a view.

Francoise and Jeff live in Washington, DC. Both are communications professionals who enjoy travel. They discovered Berkeley Springs, and its quirky, always intriguing art scene, several years ago. The beaucolic views and the personality of the town led them to purchasing a vacation home. They frequently escape Washington for long weekends with their very large dog, Sawyer.

Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

Hot springs, art galleries and George Washington's bathtub

The mountain town's mineral-rich waters have drawn visitors for hundreds of years; add to that art galleries, fine dining and George Washington's bathtub, plus lake beaches and paddleboats at the nearby Cacapon State Park, and you'll see why it's a hit with families.
