Quiet and bright. This Swiss-inspired mountain chalet was custom built in 2001 and since updated. Large windows, natural light and an open floor plan provide plenty of room to spread out and find peace and quiet. The style is clean, minimal and traditional, with a stunning forest backdrop and views. We love the wrap-around deck, the owner's vintage skis from Norway hanging above the stairs, and the stone fireplace.

My husband & I are parents to an active 6 year old boy who loves to explore! We love to escape from Portland, Oregon to the village of Neskowin on the Oregon coast for a weekend, or take a longer trip down to California's Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Our family had the most wonderful stay at Chesa Madrisa! Hillary was so helpful in the weeks leading up to our trip and gave us lots of excellent recommendations for things to do and see in the surrounding area. And the house is spectacular! Our two eldest children (5 and 3) were entertained for hours by the amazing toy cupboard (an enormous treasure trove stacked to the rafters with games, books, trains, art supplies and more...) which in turn allowed the adults to properly switch off and enjoy the beautiful surrounds. The position of the house is perfect, situated amongst stunning trees, and it was so peaceful watching the light filter through the branches into the main living space throughout the day. We would highly recommend to anyone with children as young as ours looking for somewhere to stay, but in truth I can't see who this property wouldn't appeal to - it is a truly special place, and we will definitely be back.

This home is lovely! We had a great time with our 1 year old son. It's incredibly quaint and relaxing. The details on the home are lovely - very clean, great grill and kitchen materials for cooking, a wonderful toy closet. I wish that there was an actual crib vs. a portable crib (we actually just brought our own). We went in the fall, which was beautiful, but the home definitely feels designed for a winter visit, as the porch isn't terribly friendly/small and the home can feel a little stuffy with few windows opening to get the beautiful mountain air. Just a few miles to get to a great state park with lots of fun hikes and places to explore. Would definitely recommend as a great home and place to explore beautiful Big Trees.

Big Trees, California

Creeks, trails and the biggest trees in the world

Around three hours east of San Francisco, Big Trees is tucked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and is a family adventure waiting to happen. With creeks, trails and giant sequoias, those ‘big trees’ it was named for, a trip to the State Park is must-do. Nearby you’ll also find ski resorts with year-round activity programs, wineries and former mining towns turned quaint attractions.
