Perks for the Parents

This wonderful beachfront house is in one of the most stunning locations in all Brazil, a 60-second walk from a beach voted one of the best in the country with views of ocean, forest and beach, and a sea breeze to boot. The house itself is designed using certified hardwoods and recycled boat wood for the furniture. It is well equipped with everything you need for an incredible holiday from blenders to surf boards. Housekeepers are available for babysitting - with prior arrangement. There are many good restaurants on the beach serving local dishes and a few other restaurants serving excellent international cuisine. The kitchen includes seating for 8, UV filtered drinking water, a Vitamix blender and everything you need to prepare a feast or snack.

Why Kids Love it

This is a fabulously family friendly spot, right on a sandy hillside with an acre of gardens to play in. There is a large shady glade under the Jamelao trees with a sandy area and swing. There is a 3.5m diameter trampoline to keep the kids entertained for hours. A wonderful local character call Rocky delivers food to the house by mule and can also do treks with the family and use the mules Sambura (wicker baskets) to carry the kids. One in each basket and one on the mules back! The hosts own a horse which Ricky can bring for either kids or adults. And when the kids are tired in the evenings you can have cinema evenings on the veranda overlooking the ocean. There is a bedroom with twin beds and another with a queensize bed.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days. The house is on a hillside and although the veranda has a railing around it, we advise caution with children from 1 year to 3 years - the age when children attempt to climb things with carefree abandon. We advise the same caution with the stairs that connects the 2 levels. Note that Boipeba is a remote island and that the residence is in a small village on the island. There is no doctor in the village nor pharmacy. However there is an ambulance service from Boipeba town that will pick you up and bring you to the clinic there in any emergency.

About the Location

The residence is on the island of Boipeba, 4 hours south of Salvador City, the capital of Bahia. It is car-free. The beach in front of the house is shallow and ideal for kids. For big waves, Bainema beach is a 10-minute walk away and is great for surfing and bodyboarding. There is masses to do on the island including trekking, speedboat trips, donkey and horse riding, sailing, snorkelling, paddle boarding, jungle exploration and much more. International and domestic flights arrive at Salvador airport. Transfer options include direct flights to Boipeba and taxi/speedboat options. The hosts can assist with travel information.

Accommodation Details

This residence comprises 2 houses, a main house and a guest house with a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen-diner, sleeping 2 adults and 1 child. The main house is on 2 levels with a large kitchen/ dining room, sitting room with library and projector for watching films in the evening, laundry and bathroom. All the bedrooms are on the second floor: a master bedroom with a super king size double bed, and en suite bathroom, plus 2 further bedrooms, 1 with 2 single beds and one with a queensize double bed. These rooms share a bathroom.

Style Notes

This beautifully designed boho chic home was designed by the owners, from the architecture to the decor, to suit their family. The house is built mainly using wood so it feels light and airy. The decor draws on recycled boat wood, Bahian art, antiques, local textiles and recycled wood furniture. Other details include a full wall length white marble countertop, 4 poster beds in some rooms, hammocks dotted around the various verandas, a medicinal herb garden and a veranda filled with kitchen herbs in pots.

We are a couple with 3 boys - 8 years, 4 years and 1 year. We love South America for both work and travel. In fact our work is often travel and vice versa! We love to explore Bahia, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina and the destination topping our wish list right now is Colombia. We joined Kid and Coe because we know what it's like to travel in South America with children - we designed our house (and chose the location) with this in mind. So we wanted to share this little haven from the world with other families.

Boipeba, Bahia

No shoes required

Your long journey by air, road and boat will be rewarded. Boipeba is a largely unvisited island off the coast of Brazil near Salvador and is the kind of destination your family will never forget visiting. Mango for breakfast, mornings spent snorkelling on pristine coral reefs and lazy afternoons on palm-fringed beaches are the order of the day; spot nesting sea turtles if you’re lucky, take speedboat tours of oyster bars and refresh yourself with fresh coconut juice.
