Perks for the Parents

Historic and classic, this Victorian home with a front deck and yard is 10 minutes south of downtown Boston and is well set up for a family stay. The kitchen is great for large family meals, with stools at the island and a round dining table set for 5, expandable to 8. There is a grand piano in the kitchen/living area. The master bath is a relaxing escape with soaking clawfoot tub, rain shower, and heated floors. The third floor is ideal for a nanny or au pair, but would also provide great privacy for older children.

Why Kids Love it

Find plenty of toys and books for young children, with ample play space and a smaller crib available. A gated front yard on a residential street provides room to run and picnic, and a swimming beach and playground are a 3-minute walk from the door. Explore the piers and wharves along Harborwalk, walk to JFK Library and museum, visit Fenway Park, and find the Make Way for Ducklings statues and swan boats in Boston Public Garden. The owners offer a crib, high chair, gates on stairs, enclosed play spaces and changing stations on first and second floors.

Things to Know

This is a 3-story home with primarily wood flooring. The stairs are gated on the second and third floors, but not from the first to second. For those with allergies, please note that owners have a dog when at home. Please inquire about bringing pets. Parking for 1 car in the back, and ample street parking. Seven-minute walk to the subway (Red Line T, Savin Hill) and 10-minute ride to downtown Boston.

About the Location

The residence is in the Dorchester district of south Boston, 10 minutes by car to the center and close to the University of Massachusetts Boston. It is approximately 15 minutes from Boston Airport. Subway, parks, playgrounds and beach are all within walking distance. There are nearby breakfast and ice cream spots, with local takeout and delivery options and various grocery stores in the area.

Accommodation Details

This 4-bedroom family home is set over 3 floors. The first floor has a large open kitchen and living room. The second floor has the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom plus a guest bedroom with a double/full bed and ensuite bathroom, the nursery and laundry room. The third floor has a shared bath between a guest bedroom and study overlooking the harbor. The study has a twin futon while the guest bedroom has a double/full bed. The home has a front deck and yard.

Style Notes

Historic and classic. This home was built in 1886 and has original pine flooring and architectural drawings. Classic style compliments the original Victorian design. Treelined street and large yard are inviting and well-maintained. We love the spacious nursery, the hardwood floors and the bright patterned rugs throughout. Additional touches including a telescope and grand piano make this a really special home.

Our family loves to travel, and after having a baby, realized that finding truly kid-friendly places was very difficult to do. We live in Boston and love to sail, hike and explore new places. We especially like to get the most authentic experience when traveling by staying in homes, walking around in neighborhoods, etc.

The Savin Hill residence was wonderful. It was well appointed for a family with a young child (high chair, stroller, potty, crib, etc) with lots of new books and toys to explore. For the adults, the house was beautiful clean, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen has everything you would need, and the master ensuite was a relaxing oasis. In terms of location, it is in a charming older neighborhood and about 7 minutes to the T, which makes the whole city very accessible. Elaine was very accommodating and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend!

Boston, Massachusetts

Go Red Sox!

Boston gives you the best of the city with the added benefit of the New England's gorgeous coast and countryside nearby. So you could be picking blueberries in the country farm in the morning, then shopping in the city in the afternoon, with a little stop to see the amazing aquarium along the way. Or boat tripping to one of Boston Harbour’s many islands, then off to Fenway Park for the ball game in the afternoon. There’s also the T, the swan boats in Boston Public Park, Harvard (and a great playground on Cambridge Common nearby), and dinosaur bones in the Museum of Science.
