Búzios, Brazil

Designer bikinis and sandcastles

Set on a peninsula with 17 beaches, world-class galleries, fine-dining restaurants and boutiques, beautiful Búzios is one of Brazil’s most upmarket resorts and Latin America’s answer to Saint Tropez.

Under three hours north of Rio de Janeiro and about half way down the Brazilian coast, there is plenty to keep kids and their parents, in requisite designer beachwear or not, entertained. Family-friendly beaches are an easy walk from the towns or can be reached by boat for even more fun; they tend to be shallow with very clear water and are great for even young tots. Older children will whoop at the sight of banana boating through the surf - and there are even slow rides on inflatables for kids as young as three (make sure they wear a life jacket, of course!).

Búzios, in fact, is three distinct settlements on the same peninsula – Ossos, Manguinhos and Armação de Búzios. In the north, Ossos is the oldest and most attractive, with pretty harbor and yacht club. Manguinhos, on the isthmus, is the most commercial. Armação, in between, is the heart of town, with the most tourist amenities, nightlife and Orla Bardot, the town's picturesque beachfront promenade. Stroll here to enjoy the narrow, cobblestone streets, pretty waterfront and unmistakable Portuguese influence, then mooch down Rua das Pedras, a famously stylish street of art, galleries, stalls and markets, and a key meeting place for friends to hook up.

Then it’s a case of picking your beach - catch a wave off Geribá, open to the wild Atlantic, or head around the corner to snorkel off the calmer clear-watered Ferruda. Hip Ossos beach offers chic cafes serving mouthwatering crepes and caipirinhas, while Ilhabela is the place for serious relaxing.

Beyond the beach, tours will take you out diving, or to enjoy the marine life on catamarans or glass-bottom boats. There is a skate park in Geriba and an area for extreme biking; horseback riding is also possible on the beach and on designated trails. Bring a designer bikini and a bucket and spade and enjoy this chic spot mingling with Rio’s high rollers.
