Perks for the Parents

This rural residence, the top 2 floors of a traditional farmhouse in the Garrotxa region an hour north of Girona, has geese, chicken and rabbits plus plenty of room to roam. It is well-set up for a family stay, with a full kitchen and family-sized dining area. Along with a stylish and spacious bedroom, there is a separate bathroom with a soaking tub. The view from the living space of the valley of Oix and the Pre-Pyrenees is a real tonic. It is a tranquil space in a region of protected countryside.

Why Kids Love it

There are plenty of toys and books for kids, plus a lot of space outdoors where they can run and play without cars or any other danger. There is a volleyball/badminton net, and 2 swings. There are several animals on site, including hens, rabbits and geese. A crib and high chair can be provided on request. The kids room has 2 twin beds. The family friendly beaches of the Costa Brava are an hour's drive away.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. No pets. No smoking. There are no stair gates and no elevator. There are antiques and breakables in the residence - parents are responsible for their kids at all times. There are a few drops outside the house but they have railings. Young children should be closely supervised. The hosts offer organic meat and other products from the area. It is in a remote countryside location surrounded by volcanoes, valleys, mountains, medieval churches and nature reserves. Car hire essential.

About the Location

The residence is in the middle of Alta Garrota Protected Area, 1 hour northwest of Girona. It is part of the Garrotxa region. Girona Airport is an hour away; Barcelona El Prat airport is a 2-hour drive. The nearest major towns are Girona and Besalú, with the Costa Brava an hour’s drive away.

Accommodation Details

This large apartment is on the top floor of the house with 185 sqm of space. It includes a kitchen with fireplace, double room with ensuite bathroom, and another double room and a twin bedroom. There is a spacious living room with large windows and views of the valley, and a family bathroom.

Style Notes

This large apartment is packed with antiques dating to the 16th and 19th centuries, alongside modern beds, baths and a kitchen that fit in with the historic look. Many rooms have slanted ceilings, adding to the character. We love the authentic rustic character, the terracotta floor tiles and the cobblestone walls.

I could stay at Mad Pineda forever. We were five: two grandparents, two parents, and one baby, and there was plenty of room to spare. It was a perfect summer location --pleasant temperatures, relaxing views, plenty of little towns to visit in the area, animals (sheep, chickens, geese, guinea pigs, and the cutest bunnies you'll find anywhere) and Laia could not be a more welcoming host. We opted for the Mas Pineda breakfast and cooked the rest of our meals in the apartment kitchen. Laia lent us a baby bath and high chair, and although there is a crib offered, we brought along a travel cot for the baby. It's an easy drive from Barcelona and I wholeheartedly recommend taking a few days (or a week as we did) during your travels to visit the countryside of Catalonia and stay at Mas Pineda. For those who like to hike, there is a nice path directly from the property, and plenty of others within driving distance. We were equally happy taking day trips to the towns in the area as we were staying all day relaxing on the property.

We had an absolutely amazing experience at The Mas Pineda Residence. The lodge/farmhouse had spectacular views, the grounds are beautiful and our room was charming. Laia and her husband were lovely - very helpful and kind and took extra care to make sure our son was happy - from inviting him to collect chicken eggs in the mornings to cooking him special meals. The area was also wonderful, lots of hiking and biking and touring old mountain towns. The best was relaxing on the grounds in the evening, sipping wine and watching the sun go down. Can't say enough about our experience, Las Pinedas was a magical!

Catalonia, Spain

Spain’s best-kept secret

In the furthest northeastern reaches of Spain, this triangle-shaped region has got its own character and incredibly diverse scenery. From Reus in the south right up to the border with Andorra and France, it covers Girona and Barcelona as well as red-tinged areas of scrubland, boutique vineyards, ski-able mountains in the Pyrenees and golden sand beaches. While Barcelona might be one of Europe’s most popular cities to visit, the rest of Catalonia is largely unknown and under visited - to your great benefit.
