Perks for the Parents

This boutique guest house and inn in the Hudson Valley has great views onto the Catskill Mountains and is a short trip to culinary gems in Catskill. With 4 guest rooms, it can sleep 2-10 guests. Featuring antique and vintage industrial elements, the inn is just blocks from Catskill’s Main Street, the Hudson River and the Thomas Cole House in a 3000 sqft Victorian house. It’s a great space for families: 3 of the 4 rooms sleep 2 guests, and the fourth sleeps 4 guests with a fun loft sleeping space for older children. There is also a large kitchen area with seating for 8 and a large dining table that seats 10-12 people. The location is great for a countryside break. Ski mountain Windham is 30 minutes away, Hunter Mountain is 35 minutes away, and Butternut and Catamount Mountains are a 40-minute drive.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love the wide open spaces of the Catskill Milliner. The lighting and decor make for wonderful family photos as well - the property has been rented several times as a location for photoshoots. There is a very large living room that makes for a great play space; gymnast mats are available to cover the wood floors if the kids would like to roll around and play. The house is a 4-minute drive from a great kids park at Dutchman's Landing, and a terrific sledding hill at Beatty Powers House (a 5 minute walk if you're walking with children). A 15-minute drive away is the Hudson Fireman's Museum, while in town, Kirwan's Game Store is filled with video games, Pokemon and magic products. Close by there are several farms, including the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and there is a bowling alley a 4-minute drive away.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights on regular weekends, 3 nights on long weekends (holidays). The house is available in its entirety and is not rented on a room by room basis. There are stairs in the house as well as steps up to the porch, and there is a small stair to the back yard. Note that the sleeping loft in the Fez bedroom is accessed up a ladder and is not suitable for children under the age of 8. The property has high speed internet, and the whole house has efficient ductless AC/heat as well as traditional radiator heat and excellent room insulation. The driveway can fit 2 cars and there is easy parking nearby also. Breakfast is not included; a private chef may be arranged on request.

About the Location

The property is in Catskill, 15 minutes north of Saugerties, 10 minutes east of Hudson and 15 minutes south of Athens in the Hudson Valley, New York State. The Hudson Valley is wonderful for families, with farms, countryside, farm-to-table restaurants, art, music and theater events, and history to explore. It's great for families, friendly get togethers, wedding guests and yoga retreats. The Hudson River runs along side of town, and in summers, you can kayak the bird sanctuaries. The nearest airport is in Albany, 35 minutes away. Amtrak goes to Hudson, NY, which is 10 minutes away.

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms, all with central air conditioning, high speed internet and access to a washer/dryer. There is an open plan lounge/diner/kitchen and a back yard. A pack'n'play and twin airbeds can be added; it's best to add the air bed to The Panama but every room has enough space for one. The Panama bedroom has exposed original wooden beams, polished hardwood floors and 3 walls of windows. It has a queensize bed and private bathroom with walk-in shower. The Derby bedroom has high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and polished hardwood floors. It has a queensize sleigh bed and private bathroom with walk-in shower and vintage sink. The Fez bedroom sleeps up to 4 guests and is set over a main floor with queensize bed and a loft/mezzanine accessed by a ladder with a second sleeping area. It also has a walk-in closet, excellent views of the Catskill Mountains and a shared bathroom with The Pillbox, including a clawfoot tub. The Pillbox has a large brass queensize bed and vintage furnishings plus 2 closets, and shares a bathroom with The Fez.

Style Notes

Antique and early industrial. This stunning property has high ceilings and lots of natural light; the meticulous renovation project involved peppering the rooms of this Victorian house with vintage casement windows, and removing dropped ceilings and unnecessary walls. Nearly all of the furniture and fixtures are originals from a time past emulating a retro world, with creature comforts such as excellent heating and cooling, high speed WIFi / wireless mesh, Roku TV, washer/dryer, microwave, toaster and dishwasher added to make a stay easier. We love the large living space with dressmaker dummy and mismatched vintage chairs, the wonderful exposed wood beams and the quality of the light streaming in through the windows.

Catskills, Hudson Valley

The woods are lovely…

It’s no surprise that artists, musicians and writers have fallen for the Catskills. Around two hours north of New York City, this refuge from urban life is all mountains, deep forests and pretty historical towns, and is the ideal place to introduce your kids to the great outdoors. Start them young at organic farms with tractor rides, corn mazes and fruit to pick, then graduate on to forest walks, tubing, spotting bald eagles from mountain railroads and petting goats in animal sanctuaries. Skiing on Hunter Mountain, horseback riding and splashing at Zoom Flume water park are just a few of the area’s top attractions for families.
