Perks for the Parents

This laid-back Portuguese villa in 7 acres of secluded pine forest has a large pool and a great kids bedroom. It sleeps up to 16 + 1. You can rent the main house (sleeps 8) or add on additional separate apartments as required. There’s a big dining table and a grill under a cover for feasts with family and friends. Explore the beautiful beaches (10 mins away), walk through the pine forest and sandy dust roads that surround the villa, cycle through the rice fields, watch the storks around the Lagoon of Melides. Or drive to picturesque coastal town of Comporta (25 mins up the coast) for bars, restaurants, and shops.

Why Kids Love it

The kids have a bedroom on a mezzanine level, so we recommend the villa for slightly older kids able to navigate the stairs safely. There are 4 twin / single beds tucked into the eaves so they can all be together. The grounds are large and fenced so kids can roam free in the forest here – there’s a strawberry patch to pick berries for breakfast. There’s a set of swings, hammocks to laze in and the pool, which should provide hours of fun. The nearby beaches are long and kid-friendly with shallow waters and there are numerous companies offering beach horse riding lessons and treks for kids.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights in July & August; 3 nights at other times. July and August require booking the main house and apartments to sleep up to 16, pricing on the listing reflects this. Inquire for booking a portion of the property and rates. Pets are allowed on upon request, only small, clean animals. The pool is ungated. There is a non-smoking policy inside of the house and apartments. The house and apartments are all ground floor with no stairs, except for the staircase to the mezzanine, which has a 1m (3.2 ft)-high balcony. Towels and bed linens are provided. Amenities include air conditioning, Wi-Fi, washing machine, coffee machine. There is parking on-site. Please note your privacy is guaranteed: if you rent the main house only, the apartments will not be rented.

About the Location

The property is located 10 minutes from the laid-back beach town of Melides, in Portugal’s south-east Alentejo region. It’s an area of vineyards, cork farms, charming hamlets and endless sparsely populated beaches. The untamed beauty and peace of the slow village of Melides has attracted designer Philippe Starck and architect Vincent Van Duysen who have homes here. Astonishing beautiful Atlantic-swept beaches are 10 minutes’ drive from the villa including the golden sands of Praia de Melides. Aberta Nova and Galé Beach are also a 10 minute drive. A must-visit is the creative community of Melides Art where sculptures sit amidst pine trees. You’ll find the villa in a sandy area – follow the host’s instructions carefully so you don’t get stuck in the sand. Fly into Lisbon airport, around 1 hr, 20 mins away by car.

Accommodation Details

This compound has a total of 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms spread over the main house (sleeps 8) and 4 separate apartments (sleeping 2 each). In the main house you’ll find a spacious open plan living room, kitchen and dining area. There are 3 bedrooms: a kingsize primary bedroom with ensuite bathroom, 1 queensize and an additional family bathroom. A staircase in the living room leads to a mezzanine-level kids room with 4 single / twin beds. The apartment units can be rented on request and sleep 2 each in full / double beds with their own bathrooms. Two apartments have kitchenettes. The main house has a covered terrace with a dining table seating 16. Outside is a pool with sun loungers, outside lounge, fire pit and BBQ / grill.

Style Notes

Authentic Alentejo dreaming. This villa and apartments set among cork, pine and olive trees is the perfect spot to swing in a hammock and nap. The double-height lounge on entering gives an airy, open feeling. The interiors are colorful and pretty with vibrant bed linen contrasting beautifully with the white, unadorned walls. The vibe is down-to-earth rustic with locally made blankets and furnishings. Bathrooms are simple and authentic. We love the design pieces dotted around the house, the lovely pool area surrounded by trees, and the seclusion and tranquility near the coast.

Payment policy
When a host accepts your booking, we will automatically charge your card 30% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance if the check in date is more than 6 weeks away. We will send you a balance payment reminder at 6 weeks before check in and you will be required to submit your payment to finalise your reservation. If a host accepts your booking and the check in date is 6 weeks away or less, we will charge your card 100% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance.
Cancellation policy
For cancellations notified up to 6 weeks before the check in date, guests will receive a refund of any amount paid less 10% of the total cost of the booking. For cancellations notified at 6 weeks or less before the check in date, no refunds are given unless the host agrees. If a host does agree to a full or partial refund, this amount will be returned to the guest less 10% of the total cost of the booking. Some hosts will also allow a stay to be rescheduled. Guests should contact their host for further information regarding any request to change the dates of a stay.
