Perks for the Parents

This beautiful, spacious Crown Heights duplex is over the top 2 floors of a brownstone and includes plenty of space to play, plus a family-friendly open floor plan. There is a great shower off the master bedroom, as well as a small clawfoot tub in the kids' bathroom. There is a single daybed in the common area upstairs which could be used by a nanny, au pair, or third child. Decor is quirky and beautiful and includes original photography, shaggy rugs and a hammock chair.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love rolling around in the main living area, which has lots of soft, cozy rugs and floor pillows. They also love the hammock hanging in the kitchen. There are several great playgrounds in the neighborhood, including one just 2 blocks away, next to the Brooklyn Children's Museum. There are toys and books for kids up to age 10, and a Baby Bjorn folding bed for an infant; a highchair and baby toys can be provided upon request.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. There are no baby gates installed and the main floor has staircases going both up and down. There is also a large deck off the kitchen. The windows in the bedrooms have child safety guards, but the windows on the living level do not. They do, however, open from the top for safety. Car rental not essential: the transportation options are great. The closest trains are the S to Park Place, the A to Nostrand (3 express stops to Manhattan), or the 2/3/4/5 to Franklin (the 4/5 also runs express into Manhattan). There are also a lot of buses and good street parking. The kitchen is a well-stocked with good cookware and all the basics, and there are ample sheets, towels and bath products. There is a washer/dryer, dishwasher, WiFi and Apple TV.

About the Location

The house is in Crown Heights North, right on the edge of Bed Stuy. It's a very friendly, traditionally Caribbean neighborhood, which has had an influx over the past decade of artists, young people and creatives. People say hi to each other on the street. The residence is just off Franklin Avenue, which has lots of great restaurants and little stores, and is a short walk from the Botanical Gardens, the Brooklyn Museum, Prospect Park, the Barclay's Center, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, and the big Farmer's Market on Grand Army Plaza Plaza. LaGuardia is 30 minutes away; JFK is 35 minutes away.

Accommodation Details

This 2-story apartment has a fully open plan lower floor with 2 cozy living areas at the front and an open kitchen with new Viking appliances and a dining table seating 10 in the back. Doors open onto a balcony with a table, seating and a grill. There is a half bath on this floor. Upstairs there is another sitting area with a daybed, 2 children's rooms (1 twin bed, 1 toddler bed), and a master bedroom with a queen bed. There is a bathroom with a shower off the master, and another with a tub and shower off the hallway. Both have heated floors.

Style Notes

Bright and modern. This bright, newly renovated apartment is the top 2 floors of a historic 1900 limestone townhouse on a tree-lined street. It has 11-foot ceilings, wood floors and exposed wooden beams and brick, and covers a total of 2000 sq ft. The space is bright and modern but also cozy. The white interiors are warmed up by the original wooden ceiling beams, the numerous plants and layering of textured rugs and colorful fabrics. We love the modern artwork and photography, the hanging plants and the fun kids bedrooms.

Crown Heights, Brooklyn

Bordering Prospect Park and Bed-Stuy in central Brooklyn, Crown Heights has streets of historic brownstones and parks ringing with the sounds of families having fun. Well connected to the rest of the area by public transit, it's an easy place to base yourself in the city. Don't miss the area's key treats - Brooklyn Children's Museum and Brooklyn Botanic Garden - along with Berg'n, a beer/food hall selling everything from pulled pork to burritos.
