Perks for the Parents

This LA home in the San Rafael hills, near Griffith Park, has plenty of wonderful toys, a great back yard and many playgrounds a short drive away. Owned and occupied by a family, it has a fully-stocked kitchen, with Hasami porcelain plates for you and non-breakable enamelware for kiddos. Two full baths mean you can have your space away from the kids while traveling. If you're bringing a nanny, the office with pull-out bed is ideal. When you’re cooking, there is a clear view to the outside, so kids can play happily while you get the essentials one. There is also a little laundry closet with brand new washer-dryer, soaking sink and custom cabinetry.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love playing in the backyard - with toys like a Fisher Price slide, kiddie pool, ride-on firetruck, and sidewalk chalk available on request. Inside, there are lots of good quality toys, including all the Brio trains a kid could want, plus puzzles, cars and trucks, barn and farm animals, musical instruments, stuffed animals and tons of books. Because the house is in the hills, it's not super walkable, but there are many great playgrounds under a 10-minute drive away. It's a great spot for young families and many places in the area cater to that clientele. There is a Stokke high chair in the dining room, and an Inglesina clip-on high chair is also available on request for younger children.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 6 days. The house is on 1 level so there is no need for stair gates. There is a housekeeper who visits every other Tuesday. A travel crib is available on request for babies and for toddlers there is a toddler bed. Car rental is essential: there is plenty of street parking as well as a driveway that could reasonably fit 2 cars. Safety-wise, there is a low wall in the backyard; the owners have planted lots of larger plants in front so it's not tempting for kids. The fireplace is functional—you can use it or not at your own discretion. The owners have a dog, who will be away during your stay.

About the Location

The residence is on the border of Eagle Rock and Glassell Park in Northeast Los Angeles. There are 2 great restaurants nearby that have little play area, plus lots of great parks nearby and walking streets and shops. If it's hot, there's also several cuter indoor play areas around. About a 10-minute drive away in Pasadena, the Kidspace Museum is a major family favorite. Ten minutes in the other direction is Griffith Park, where you can go to the Los Angeles Zoo, Travel Town (a train museum!) and go on the carousel and pony rides. LAX is a 30-40 minute drive away, depending on traffic.

Accommodation Details

This 3-bedroom, 1-floor California-style ranch house has an open plan kitchen and dining area and spacious living room with projector TV you can easily hide from kids if you're anti-screen. The master bedroom has a kingsize bed, and the children’s room has a toddler-sized bed, which can convert back to a crib as needed. The third bedroom is set up as an office and has a double-sized pull-out couch. The plant-filled outdoor area includes fun kid-approved grass area and parent-approved patio with outdoor dining and lounging area, Weber grill and views overlooking the city.

Style Notes

Modern neutral. This beautiful family home is calming neutral colors and rustic accents. The main living space includes cream walls, an exposed brick wall and a moon phase calendar, strung across the wall. The children’s room is more colorful, and of course packed with toys. The kitchen and exterior were revamped in 2017 — appliances are all new and work well, and it’s beautiful and easy to cook in. The host has green fingers and loves working with Native California plants, which are all over the property. Breathe deep in summer: there is sage and jasmine in the back yard and rosemary and lavender near the front.

Eagle Rock, Los Angeles

A taste of charming, small town LA

Located in San Rafael Hills, Eagle Rock was ranked by Redfin as one of the country's hottest neighborhoods and will make your trip to LA feel memorable and small-town. Jukeboxes still jam in the neighborhood's authentic diners and vinyl still spins in its second hand bookstores. Spot film crews along quaint main boulevards, hike to the top of its eponymous rock, and drive through tree-lined streets for a tour of historic homes and architecture.
