Perks for the Parents

This historic Eastern Shore home with a pool and hot tub is set up with a playrooms and bedrooms for the kids, plus a zipline, trampoline, kayaks and bikes, and is ideal for a family getaway. With 4 bedrooms and plenty of space, it works well for a larger family or 2 families traveling together. The property has 2 master bedrooms, one on each floor, both with ensuite shower bathrooms, plus kids bedrooms with multiple beds and trundles to suit different configurations. The home sits just feet from the water and has kayaks and fishing equipment for enjoying the quiet bay inlets.

Why Kids Love it

From the hanging cane chair in the lounge to the garden, complete with zipline and in ground trampoline, not to mention the kayaks, bikes and ping pong table, this house has so much to entertain and delight kids. Inside, there are plenty of games, arts and crafts, books and AV equipment, and there is a playroom with a futon that can comfortably sleep a nanny or au pair. The shared bathroom upstairs near the kids' bedrooms has a bathtub in it. The home does not have items for babies/toddlers and has some hazards for smaller children - we'd recommend it for age 4 and up.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. There are no extra heating charges unless guests stay for more than one week. There is no extra charge for firewood. Note that while the house has an ungated pool there is an electric pool cover. Kids should be supervised around the heated pool, hot tub and in a few other areas: the ungated stairs inside the house are steep and the house sits just feet from a creek that is over 6 feet in depth. The pool is not available September-May, but the hot tub is. There is driveway parking for several cars and over an acre of outdoor space on a small, private, dead end street, making it quiet and less-traveled by cars. The kitchen is well-equipped and user-friendly for guests, easy to keep clean and maintain. Local attractions are especially suited to outdoorsy kids.

About the Location

The residence is in Royal Oak, a historic, naturally beautiful recreation spot on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay that is an equal distance to Washington DC and Baltimore (1.5 hour’s drive). It is often used by cyclists, birdwatching enthusiasts, and sailors for retreats and vacations, and is surrounded by historic colonial towns where there are restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions. Car rental is essential in this location; the nearest international airports are in DC and Baltimore. Royal Oak is close to Easton and Oxford and an hour from Annapolis; there are museums, a lighthouse and restaurants in St Michaels, 4 miles away.

Style Notes

This beautiful historic home was completely rebuilt in 2011 and combines a traditional exterior with a modern interior, fun contemporary and vintage furnishings, a gourmet kitchen, and an open floor plan. The decor is a mix of well-curated vintage and modern finds, from the cane hanging chair and cowhide rug in the lounge to the picture portrait wallpaper in the kitchen and the cute chalkboard-painted stair treads. We love the colorful, irrepressible spirit of this country home, and the fantastic details for families.

We are a family of five. My husband and I are both physicians, and our kids right now are 15, 13 and 10. We enjoy traveling both within and outside the US, eating new foods, and learning about different cultures. We also (me especially) love interior design and the opportunity that Kid and Coe gives us to stay in homes where owners often have a great eye and fabulous aesthetic.

Harriet Tubman, nature preserves and rocket launches

On the east side of the Chesapeake Bay, this peninsula has history, wildlife and even occasional rocket launches to keep the whole family entertained. Follow the Harriet Tubman trail to find out more about the legendary Underground Railroad conductor, explore the wilderness of Blackwater’s forests, where the sky is studded with eagles, and follow a native guide through Bending Water Park as a unique way to experience the waterways. Before you go, visit NASA’s website to find out when rocket launches from Wallops Island are scheduled - blast off can be viewed from this bay-side area too.
