Perks for the Parents

This delightful family home has plenty of space for all the family plus all sorts of toys and conveniences for those with younger children. The kids will love the hanging day bed in the backyard and families will love eating meals al fresco on our sunny deck. Guests can borrow the family’s 2 bicycles (one is outfitted with child seat), helmets and bike lock. There is a grill for use in the backyard as well as a built in outdoor sound system. Bustling College Avenue is only 3 blocks away, offering a variety of great restaurants.

Why Kids Love it

There are plenty of books and toys for younger kids, including a cute play table and a blue play kitchen. The backyard is comfortable and enclosed, so safe for kids to play in. There are 2 playgrounds within easy walking distance and the block is full of kids in the 6-12 age range - it is not uncommon to see them all playing basketball or riding their bikes on the street. The property is a 10-minute drive from downtown Berkeley's kids delights, including the Habitot Children's Discover Museum.

Things to Know

FYI! The hosts have an outdoor cat that will stay away from kids and largely keeps away from the home, but for those allergic to cats, there may be some issues. A double air bed is available to accommodate a further 1-2 guests. There are a few steps outside in the back yard and no stair gates in the property. Inquire if you are traveling with young children and would like to borrow items - the hosts have a crib and high chair available for use and on occasion, their stroller will also be available, in addition to a scooter and tricycle.

About the Location

The residence is 3 blocks from College Avenue which has a variety of restaurants and shops and a library with extensive collection of books and DVDs. It is an unbeatable location in the heart of the Elmwood neighborhood. There is Whole Foods Market and Safeway about a 8-10-minute walk away. BART and UC Berkeley are both less than a mile away. It is about a 25-minute drive from downtown San Francisco and the Oakland border is a 5-minute walk. Oakland Airport is a 20-minute drive and SFO is about a 50-minute drive (with no traffic).

Style Notes

Light, bright and airy with fabulous wall colors, top of the range appliances and cozy, relaxing and inviting spaces. This family home was built in 1912 in the craftsman style. The decor is tasteful with wood floors, built in wardrobes, neutral colors and comfortable sofas. We love the custom kids kitchen, the hanging day bed in the backyard and the well-chosen library of preschool titles in the toddler bedroom.

My husband Andy and I live in the Elmwood neighborhood of Berkeley CA with our 6 year old daughter Elodie and 3 year old son Wescott. A native San Franciscan, I most recently lived in New York city and Washington DC for a combined 12 years. Travel has been in my blood from an early age, thanks to adventurous parents. Some favorites spots are Istanbul, Paris, Stockholm, Tulum and Havana. Traveling with kids presents some challenges as we parents know, which is why I was so happy to find kidandcoe.

Elmwood, Berkeley

Tree-lined streets and Craftsman-style homes

To the southeast of downtown Berkeley near the University of California, Elmwood is a mainly residential family-friendly area of tree-lined streets and Craftsman style homes bordering the more dynamic student area. A 10-minute drive from the city, San Francisco and the beaches beyond are a short car journey away too. The area has a movie theater and library with child-oriented events, and it’s an easy place to stay as a family.
