Gilleleje, Copenhagen

Crab racing and quiet beaches

Under an hour from central Copenhagen by car, this pretty seaside town has long sandy beaches, a fun fisherman's themed playground (complete with crab racing track) and cafés lining the quay selling fish and chips. Rent a bike and cycle quiet lanes, play on the beach and swim in the clear water, or browse the shops for beach toys and interior design treats.

We stayed on Jael's properties over Christmas with our extended family - including a 5 year old, and a toddler. Though we were in the "off season" we still very much enjoyed the surrounding area including the beach, local restaurants, towns, etc. We also traveled into Copenhagen twice which was quite easy on the train. The house had everything we needed for cooking for a large group. There were plenty of linens for the bathrooms and bedrooms, and we appreciated the snacks, coffee, etc. that was left for us. Jael was a very responsive host. We had a slight issue on checkin finding the very well-hidden key, and with the Wifi subscription, but both were fixed with a few text messages, no problem at all. There was a note from a previous person about the safety of the wood stove. Happy to say that we had no concerns with our toddler, as they had fitted that area with a small gate to keep away curious hands. The stove warmed the place pretty quickly even on the chilliest days, though we did need bundle up for bed. We'd love to make it back to enjoy the warm, sunny weather and the bbq!

Our second stay in this pretty little summerhouse. We had a fantastic time; such a comfortable, simple and thoughtful place to come back to after days spent exploring. Thank you, Jael.

What can I say! It's been a few weeks since we came back from this beautiful place, and we are still talking about it now. Jael's summerhouse is a haven of calm. Simple, thoughtful and peaceful. Our little boys loved running around the garden and playing under the garden shower. We loved having the option of two decks to sit out on, one in the studio, one on the main house. The area is delightful - Munkeruphus with its beautiful descent to the beach being a must to visit for anyone who comes. We also enjoyed plenty of day trips and lazy days just strolling through Gilleleje's little high street and heading to the beach there too. This was everything we needed to unwind. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a family holiday off the beaten track and yet still feels easy to do too. Thank you!

We (family of 4; kids were 5 & 2) had an absolutely brilliant time staying at Jael's house. It is small but really nicely designed (and my wife is an interior designer so very choosy on these things!) with a lovely little garden. It is in a super peaceful area and a close drive/long walk to some absolutely stunning (and largely empty beaches). We loved that it felt really off the beaten track but in no way isolated. Jael was super helpful - responded immediately to any queries we had - but really everything was so easy and well set up that we didn't need her. I would strongly recommend

We had a fabulous weeks staying at The Gilleleje Residence. Its a lovely house with a great garden for kids to run about in. It also has a summer house for any extra guests. The local area is really lovely, with gorgeous beaches nearby and the local village of Gilleleje has an interesting fishing port with some nice shops and cafes along the high street. There are super markets nearby, a laundrette and other interesting villages and towns to visit also. Copenhagen was easy to get to with a car. The host, Jael, was friendly, helpful and easy to contact to ask any questions. We would definetly come back, Denmark is a great place with lovely people.

Jael's house and garden is a real oasis in the most beautiful part of the world and a stunning retreat only a short drive from Copenhagen. Jael was so quick and kind in answering countless questions and offered everything we needed to make our stay really easy. We felt immediately welcome and at home especially with the wonderful basket of food; a delicious bottle of wine for the adults and ice lollies for the kids. The house is beautifully and simply furnished making family life really relaxed. Everything had been through of, we all loved the netflix and apple tv, toys and games and the outside shower was a real hit with our boys. A real haven.
