Perks for the Parents

This glorious cottage in Renfrewshire has country views from the hot tub, fresh air, bright stars at night and plenty to entertain the kids. While just 25 minutes from Glasgow and 15 minutes from Glasgow Airport, you'll feel like you're in the Scottish Highlands. The garden has views of mountains and no neighbors nearby, and includes a top of the range hot tub, an adult’s garden swing, a large decking area for al fresco dining, a barbecue, fire pit, bird feeders and a gate leading to the 70,000 acres Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. There are plenty of adult board games and books indoors, as well as a piano, TV with Freeview, a log burning stove, Aga cooker and underfloor heating.

Why Kids Love it

Outdoor play is the message for the children, with plenty of grassy areas to explore to the front and back, and a 2-level Wendy House, swing and slide set, a tree-swing, climbing rope, a seesaw, and small river. If that wasn’t enough, a gate takes you straight into the 70,000 acres of Scottish countryside where sheep lazily graze. On rainy days, there are plenty of toys, games, a play theatre and books to keep the kids entertained - as well as a TV with freeview in the lounge. The sweet children’s bedroom includes 2 twin beds and a pastel pink and gray color scheme.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 days. Note that young children may need extra supervision around the small stream and in the garden. The shed contains a ladies and a men’s bike, with a Burley trailer for 2 small children, for happy bike rides along the small single track country road. This is a countryside location where car rental is essential. There are shops and supermarkets a short drive away, plus 3 traditional Scottish pubs, a bakery, a farmers market, a café and a gift shop in nearby Lochwinnoch. Lochwinnoch also has an RSPB Centre with fantastic walking and wildlife, and Castle Semple Loch with more walking and water sport activities.

About the Location

The cottage is set just outside the village of Lochwinnoch along a single track country road in the heart of Clyde Muirshiel regional park. It is a 15-20 minute drive from Glasgow Airport and a 25-minute drive from the city itself. There are no immediate neighbours, other than the sheep in the fields outside. A mile further up the country road takes you to the Clyde Muirshiel visitor centre, with a series of stunning walking trails. A train station in Lochwinnoch takes you to Glasgow city center in 25 minutes. The coastal town of Largs, with its famous beachfront, Kelburn Country park, Nardini’s café and ferry to Millport, is 25 minutes in the other direction.

Accommodation Details

The cottage is set over 1 floor with underfloor heating in the hall and bathroom, a lounge with log-burning stove, family kitchen, state of the art TV, piano and feature window with views over the hills of Clyde Muirshiel. The children’s bedroom contains 2 single beds, 1 baby cot and a wardrobe, with toys, books, a reading nook and a play theatre. The adult’s bedroom is tranquil, with more stunning views, and an extremely comfortable and enormous emperor-size Italian bed on a VI spring mattress. The bathroom has a shower only.

Style Notes

Modern rustic. With over 200 years of history, Clovenstone retains its cottage charm with an Aga cooker, log-burning stove, warm tartan curtains, artwork and charming piano. Carefully selected pieces of furniture add modern touches. Full of Scottish character throughout, guests can unwind in the peaceful setting, or soak in the hot tub enjoying views of the stunning landscape, while the children play on the swings or in the Wendy House. We love the romantic countryside location and the superior fixtures and furnishings.

Family of 5, including 3 beautiful daughters! Being Scottish expats living in the UAE, our favourite place is Scotland, where we have a beautiful countryside cottage (which is on Kid & Coe!). Our kids love the outdoors, whether it's horse-riding, swimming, skiing, cycling/scooting, kites on the beach (UAE) or running after the sheep in the fields (Scotland)! If it's too hot (UAE) or too rainy (Scotland) they also enjoy indoors, where they love to dance, cook and create puppet shows. Just the usual stuff...

Glasgow, Scotland

Prams, rockets and spitfires

Known for its art school and its architecture, Glasgow’s museums and galleries are a must see. Kids will love the Kelvingrove’s suspended Spitfire; Glasgow Science Centre is ideal for hands-on fun, while The Riverside Museum is packed with transport items from prams to rockets and is in a stunning Zaha Hadid-designed building. For a little more culture, why not visit the Tron Theatre for storytelling sessions for babies and toddlers, or take a day trip to Edinburgh, an hour away by train or car, for a two-city break.
