This collection of private homes on an estate once owned by Bette Davis includes 1 and 2 bedroom cottages, and has a heated saltwater pool and hot tub and easy access to Griffith Park for family fun in Los Angeles. The shared garden is perfect for a family, with paths, pergolas, tame chickens, a French lavender maze, hammocks and a drought-resistant sand garden or ‘beach’ for building sandcastles. It is a great location for exploring the city yet staying somewhere peaceful and quiet with enough space for all the family. You can be in downtown LA in 15 minutes, yet relax by the pool with views of mountains around you.

The collection of properties can be booked in tandem for larger family gatherings, and sleep a total of 12 in beds, with additional sofa beds and air beds accommodating up to 19 for an extra fee. The host can also can offer a stocked fridge, art lessons, and horseback riding.

What we love

  • Nearby family activities include the LA Zoo, ice skating, bike rentals, Travel Town, Walt’s Barn, pony rides, kayaking, hiking and playgrounds.
  • The back gate leads to Easter Field and Griffith Park, and there is bike riding in the front car park, all gated and secure.
  • There are original features dating to Bette Davis’ tenure here in the 1940s and the properties are named after her leading men and key characters from her films.
  • The properties are owned by an interior designer and decor is largely bohemian but unfussy, with hammocks, outdoor lounge areas and Moroccan lanterns.

I am a mom of two school-age children, Winston and Vivienne. I'm originally from England but have been here in LA for 15 years. We split our time between Rivergate House and Sunset Ranch, my husbands horse riding facility on the Hollywood side of Griffith Park. I am also a keen painter and can often be found in the studio or pruning the lavender in the garden.

Glendale, Los Angeles

In the Verdugo Mountains

Between Burbank and Pasadena, Glendale is one of the city’s most prestigious and admired neighborhoods, with some stunning architecture courtesy of Frank Lloyd Wright, plus play spaces and kids cafés, and some of the city’s most family-friendly attractions within easy reach, including Los Angeles Zoo, a couple of miles away.
