It’s been 3 years since we were blessed with the opportunity to live with our 5 children here in Paradise (aka Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica) and I often lay in bed at night as the monkeys are howling and the frogs are chiming in and wonder how my life has changed so much. It used to be the honks of car horns and sirens of ambulances from the 27th floor that were the last sounds of the day as I feel asleep. From the hustle and bustle of a huge US city like Chicago to the tranquil beach and jungle setting of Costa Rica has been a real life journey. Being involved in real-estate on Michigan Ave in one of the largest cities in The US had me programmed in a way that did not allow me to “stop and smell the roses” as it’s often described. Not sure I would have even known what that really meant or how to do that at that time in my life. Then a series of professional events led me to The Palms on Flamingo Beach. I can still hear my and my wife’s family ”You’re moving where….Costa Rica? Then something happened and I only see it now looking back. All the fears of the unknown and change that our families held were just poured out on us. We heard of every Urban Legend about this beautiful country, we heard reasons why we couldn’t make that change in our lives, we heard family telling us that it was irresponsible, we heard them tell us about mistakes in their lives, we heard about the poverty and I have to admit it had me second guessing something that was feeling so natural when I made the decision I kept thinking and wondering where did that guy, that was standing at the end of the white sands of Playa Flamingo and felt so free, alive and adventurous, disappear to? When I really searched what I found was that the environment around us back in Chicago is beautiful, sophisticated, fulfilling, convenient and an honor to be a part of, but there were things that we were just not getting. The things that really matter most in life in our opinion. I had some modest professional success and we had learned to be content with our upper middle class life back in Chicago, but we longed for something more and we found it. We still watch our NFL Game Day Pass on Sunday thanks to the Internet reaching to the far stretches of the earth (Go Bears) and we have almost every comfort that we had back home. I will confess that I miss a Chicago Maxwell St polish or a Cubs Major League Baseball game, but those are the things we love to do when we are back in the city and we seem to appreciate them more. We realized, just in the time it took us to go wrap up our Chicago life and logistically prepare for the move we had been conforming back to our fast paced life and had started to forget the magic of Costa Rica! It’s now become a mission of mine to bring this type of raw human contentment that can only come from a place like this to the world. Not everyone is going to move completely like we’ve done, but I have not met one person, in the three years we’ve been successfully introducing Costa Rica to people, that has said they regret coming and wish they had gone somewhere else. Come and “smell the roses” for a vacation, for a season, or like us, for life.
