Perks for the Parents

This apartment in an original 17th century Umbrian farmhouse, a short drive from Perugia, is part of an estate with plenty for kids including a pool and play area. All the properties in the estate are private and self-catering with a private entrance but benefit from hotel-style services to make a stay easier. They include an onsite restaurant (open twice a week and with a children’s menu), food delivery, a shopping service and fresh bread and pastries every day. Massage and beauty treatments can be booked along with babysitting for an extra fee. Surrounded by acres of land and with views of Gubbio and fireflies from the terrace in the evening, it is a relaxing location for a countryside getaway.

Why Kids Love it

The estate is set up with families in mind and has a wide range of items to keep them happy. Toys and books for under 8s are provided in the property; there is a TV with media player offering children’s movies and TV programs in English. The lawn is a safe area to run and play in and there is a play area. Along with the large swimming pool, there are pool toys and a heated splash pool for little ones. Family activities and attractions nearby include castles to visit, boat trips on nearby lakes, bowling, caves and the Gubbio Dinosaur Museum. The Perugina chocolate factory is a short drive away and the location makes a daytrip to the beach possible too (1.5 hours' drive away).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights (Saturday to Saturday only) in peak season, 3 nights at other times. There is parking on site. This property is all on 1 level without stairs. The garden is partially fenced, but not completely, so children can escape to the play lawn and into the olive groves. The pool is fenced and gated. WiFi is included and there is a good cell phone signal on the estate. The property has a baby bath, is equipped with a wide range of children's facilities including plastic plates and cutlery, steps, potties, high chair, cot, changing mat and a sterilizer. Car rental is strongly recommended in this rural area.

About the Location

The apartment is set on an Umbrian farm estate in the hills of Valfabbrica around 30 minutes northeast of Perugia. The villa is 1.5 km from the village of Casa Castalda, which has a variety of shops including, a butchers, cheese shop, bakers and 2 grocery stores and a children's play park, and a short walk from Carbonesca, which has 2 bars and a small shop. The wonderful medieval town of Gubbio is only 25 minutes' drive away and Assisi is a 15 km picturesque drive from the house. The closest airport is in Perugia, a 30-minute drive away, with others in Ancona, Rimini, Rome, Bologna, Pisa and Florence.

Accommodation Details

The apartment has 3 bedrooms (1 king, 1 twin and 1 with a single bed and a crib) and a large large open plan living and dining area with a fully equipped kitchen. It has a large private outside space with views of the ancient olive groves and the surrounding countryside. There is a large shaded sitting area. The terrace is surrounded by fragrant herbs such as bay, rosemary, thyme, mint and lavender. The terrace is shaded by a hand-crafted wooden pergola and also has a table and gas grill.

Style Notes

Part of the original old barn - the granaio, the Gubbio is at the end of the terrace and is light, bright and cheery. Modern paintings of farm animals hang on the wall while outside spaces have herb beds and butterfly-attracting plants. It is a spacious and extremely private apartment with views of the ancient olive groves. We love the country-style kitchen and the rustic Italian touches - terracotta tiles floors among them.

We were a young energetic couple who gave up sensible jobs in the city to pursue our dream of living and working in Italy. We are passionate about preserving the environment, locally grown food and embracing a slower pace of life. We spent several years painstakingly restoring our abandoned 17th century farmstead and even longer resurrecting and clearing the 20 acres of surrounding olive groves and abandoned countryside. We have opened our home to visitors since 2007 -We are pleased to say that after many years of hard work we have created a beautiful, environmentally & family friendly holiday villa that offers the perfect place in which to enjoy everything Umbria has to offer. We also manage and run a small organic farm which grows soft fruit, olives for oil and organic vegetables. We are now lucky enough to be living the Italian dream at Villa Pian Di Cascina with our 3 young children, our lovely black Labrador, Ollie and our very friendly flock of chickens.

Gubbio, Perugia

The town of fools

This town, known as the 'city of fools' is in the northeast of Perugia on the lowest slope of Mount Ingino. It's also the name of the surrounding commune, which includes a series of nearby villages. Take a cable car trip to the top of the mountain, admire the town's impressive piazza, cathedral and Roman ruins, and don't forget to run round the small fountain at Largo Bargello to earn your traditional 'fool's license'.
