Perks for the Parents

This light and airy Amsterdam apartment has plenty of space for all the family and is close to the Jordaan and central station, with a playground at the end of the street. Quiet and atmospheric, it is an ideal hideout for visiting Amsterdam. The loft-style apartment is set over 2 floors and includes a small roof terrace and a bathroom with massage/jacuzzi tub at the top. The location is unique, in the north of Amsterdam where former shipyards have been turned into artists studios.

Why Kids Love it

There is lots of space for all the family in the main open plan living space. The kids bedroom is set in the eaves of the house and has sloping ceilings. There is a great playground 50m away at the end of the street, a large playground with toys (including bikes) within 400m, and an animal farm 300m away where kids can cuddle rabbits. The Westerpark is also close by, a great park with a playground, Sunday market, galleries and nice coffee bars.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 days. The apartment is on the 2nd floor and has locks on the window so they cannot be opened easily by children. There are steps up to every floor and no elevator; as typical of Amsterdam homes, they are steep. Stair gates are available (please request). Children should be supervised on the roof terrace/balcony. Car rental may be useful in this location, slightly out of the city center. It takes around 25 minutes to reach the heart of the city by public transit. Two extra spare beds and a travel crib are available on request.

About the Location

The apartment is on the so-called Western Islands on the fringe of center of Amsterdam. Close enough to walk into popular areas like the Haarlemmerstraat and Jordaan and within walking distance of the Central Station (approximately 15 minutes away), it is a convenient area for a family stay. The Western Islands comprise Prinseneiland, Realeneiland and Bickerseiland, and are home to artists, galleries and a few old, but still active wharfs. Schiphol airport is around 25 minutes away.

Accommodation Details

This 140-sqm 2-floor apartment is on the second and third floors of a historic house. It has a large living room on the second floor with open kitchen, dining and seating area with a cozy fireplace. On the third floor you'll find 2 bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with hot tub/massage bath and walk-in shower. The master bedroom has a queensize bed and access to a roof deck, and the second bedroom has 2 double beds.

Style Notes

Modern/Industrial. This historic Amsterdam home has a loft-style layout and look, with pine flooring, an open plan living space and white walls. Previously the office of a glass factory, it is decorated in a combination of modern/industrial style with family antiques in a spacious loft style. We love the sleek and luxurious gray/white bathroom, the characterful bedrooms, and the open plan living space.

Me and my wife Valentine have two lovely daughters Alexandra (9) and Isabelle (7). We both work, myself in well engineering and my wife in advertising. After work we're either in one of the nice little restaurants close by or in one of the playgounds, the skateramp or in the animalfarm round the block with our daughters. And in summer we swim with the neighbourhood kids in 'het IJ'.
