Perks for the Parents

This large 2-floor apartment is in the middle of San Francisco, walking distance to Golden Gate Park and its museums, and includes a sunny patio and plenty of items for kids under 5. The layout works for a family traveling with or without grandparents or an au pair - a downstairs bedroom suits extra guests while the top floor has a master suite and children’s bedroom. There is a downstairs office for those who need to take work with them, plus a huge kitchen with Wolf range, full laundry room and lots of space to spread out.

Why Kids Love it

This home is great for children of all ages, and there are plenty of toys and books suitable for ages 4 and under. There is a convertible crib/toddler bed, plus a pack’n’play (so 2 babies/toddlers can be accommodated) and 2 high chairs can be provided upon request. The children’s bedroom has plenty of space to play and sleep, and has a toddler bed/crib. The property is within a few minutes walk of 3 different playgrounds with easy access to the city at large. All outlets in the home are tamper-resistant and there are child-safety locks on the appropriate cabinets, with extra locks upon request.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. This apartment is the entire top 2 stories of a 3-story building with a private entrance. A stair gate can be provided for the top of entry stairs; the other stairs are split-level and carpeted with no need for a gate. Young children may need supervision on the stairs. There is a pretty and well-maintained patio with a lemon tree and benches, but no grass/yard. Children should be supervised in the back patio. The owners have a dog (who will not be there during guest stays). The Muni train, bus lines and several Ford Go bike stations are nearby; this location walk score of 98 ensures you won't need a car.

About the Location

The residence is in Haight-Ashbury, right in the middle of San Francisco. SFO is 25 minutes away. You can walk 3 blocks to Golden Gate Park and all the museums within, including the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, California Academy of Science and the DeYoung. Also nearby is Alamo Square Park (home of the famous Painted Ladies), and many markets, shops and a Whole Foods. There are 3 playgrounds within a 5-minute walk. Lively Haight Street is 1 block away, and family friendly Cole Valley is 4 blocks away with lots of kid-friendly dining options.

Accommodation Details

This 4-bedroom, 2 full bath, 2-story Victorian apartment is on the top 2 floors of a 3-story building. It has a large kitchen, adjacent formal dining room, and traditional double parlor living room. There is a shared back patio/yard with lemon tree and bench. The top floor has a master suite with queensize bed plus a child's room with crib/toddler bed, and on the lower level there is an additional bedroom with queensize bed and an office with a fold-out couch. Bathrooms include shower and bath options.

Style Notes

Modern Victorian. This elegant family home has wooden floors, neutral walls, period details and a warm and sophisticated feel. Large south-facing bay windows let in a lot of light to the double parlor and office, while high-coved ceilings and a tiled gas-burning fireplace reference the home’s history. To make a stay easy with kids, a well-appointed kitchen features a kitchen island with seating and a child's table/nook for crafts. We love the sleek dining room with its a traditional box-beamed ceiling, modern wood slab table and chandelier.

Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco

Birthplace of the counterculture

In the mid 1960s, this San Francisco neighborhood was it: the birthplace of the summer of love, flower power and the counterculture. Today, it’s still creative and alternative, with multi-colored boutiques and homes, and fun restaurants. Golden Gate Park, a few blocks to the west, is a great place to play and explore, while annual street fairs in June revive the spirit of the sixties with music, food and dance.
