Perks for the Parents

This top floor Harlem apartment is close to many of the city’s greatest parks for families, with a comfortable master bedroom and a second bedroom suitable for kids. The bathroom has a rainshower and bath for the kids, and the living room is spacious enough to add a double air mattress and use the existing sofa bed for a larger group. French doors separate the living room from the dining room to add extra privacy. Nine blocks from Central Park in the SoHa area, it has bakeries, bistros, culture and transportation a short walk away. The owner is a teacher: books and toys can be made available for children of all ages.

Why Kids Love it

The location is fantastic for kids with plenty to explore nearby. Take off to Central Park for picnics, the zoo, and walks around the reservoir. Hit the the playgrounds at Morningside Park and enjoy the views of St. John the Divine Cathedral and the waterfalls. Take in a concert or watch the dogs at Marcus Garvey Park. Neighbors are extremely friendly and will strike up a conversation and learn your names. Explore Hamilton Grange, the home of founding father Alexander Hamilton in St. Nicholas Park. Shop for toys at Grandma's place and stroll past Maya Angelou's brownstone for literary inspiration.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days; maximum stay 10 days. The apartment is on the top floor of a 7-story building with an elevator. There is street parking, but the rules to move cars are somewhat tricky; with great public transit links a short walk away, car rental may not be necessary. Please consult with the host if you plan to bring your car. There is a fire escape off the kitchen, but it has a child proof gate. The apartment is walking distance from Saint John's the Divine Cathedral (15 minutes), Columbia University (10 minutes), Apollo Theater (5 minutes), Morningside Park (5 minutes). There are 3 subway stations a 5-minute walk away, with subways 2,3,A,B,C,D, and it takes 15 minutes by subway to reach midtown or 25 minutes to downtown. The owners have a dog, who will be away during your stay.

About the Location

The apartment is in South Harlem, 9 blocks from Central Park, in an area affectionately being called ‘SoHa’. It is funky and diverse, with history and character; streets are very broad and well-lit and it is easy and safe to walk around, even at night. The apartment is surrounded by Harlem brownstones, gospel churches, and old jazz clubs. The Apollo Theater, Minton's Playhouse and Showman's all only a few blocks away. Also close by is the Studio Museum of Harlem, and Celebrity Chef Marcus Samuelsson's restaurant, Red Rooster. Most of the major museums including the Museum of Natural History, Guggenheim, Whitney and the Met are 30 minutes by bus or subway, or a nice walk through the park from the apartment. It is a 20-minute drive to LaGuardia and 30-40 minutes to JFK.

Style Notes

Light, comfortable, and relaxed. This pre-war apartment has charm and original details including a stained glass door. High ceilings, hardwood floors, modern furniture, and accents of blues and grays run throughout. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances and sturdy Heath ceramic dishes. We love the comfortable living areas and the eat-in kitchen.

My husband Eric and I spend time frequently with our nephew. His dad is a pilot, so they make regular visits to see us in NYC. We've had big family reunions in ou space and we think it works well. We are hoping to start our own family now, so we joined Kid & Coe to offer our home as a place that we think other families, not just our own, will like.

Harlem, Manhattan

DJ sets and double dutch

This part of Upper Manhattan runs from the East River to the Hudson and is known for its treelined brownstone blocks and multicultural community. Stop by the Totally Kid Carousel in Riverbank State Park - it’s the only one in the world designed by kids - or enjoy impromptu concerts, DJ sets and plays in the neighborhood's many parks in the summer.
