Perks for the Parents

This renovated doctor’s house in the central Oud West neighborhood is walking distance from the city’s main attractions. The residence is in one of the most vibrant and family-friendly districts of Amsterdam with cool café-bars, restaurants, concept stores and boutiques nearby. De Hallen, a cultural center with artisanal shops, a cinema and a food hall, is a 10-minute walk away. This light-filled house is ideal for a family stay with open plan spaces, a large kitchen table for meals and a ground floor that flows out to an enclosed garden with trees, pot plants and outside seating. The location makes it easy to explore the city, its canals and its family-friendly areas.

Why Kids Love it

The house is well equipped with an abundance of toys and books for boys, girls and babies. The large rooms downstairs provide plenty of space to run around on a rainy day. Parents can easily keep an eye on children playing in the garden from the French doors in the kitchen and there is a baby’s room with a wooden crib. Opposite the house is a playground for ball games while the Vondelpark with a pool, playgrounds and outdoor theater is an easy 10-minute walk and is perfect for a picnic and exploring on a sunny day. Alternatively, pack the buckets and spades for a 30-minute drive to the white sandy beach at Wijk aan Zee.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. The house has ground floor access and is on 2 stories with a wooden, uncarpeted staircase. There are 2 balconies with 1 accessed from the master bedroom. A baby bath and a stair gate are provided and there are window guards. All 3 children's rooms contain high beds with ladders so may not be suitable for very young children, but there is a sofa bed they can use so they don't have to sleep in the high beds. There is no parking but public transport in Amsterdam is reliable with trains, trams and buses running close to the house. Cycling is easy and enjoyable; there are bikes available for children aged around 7-9.

About the Location

The house is in the Oud-West area of Amsterdam with plenty of shops and cafés nearby as well as playgrounds and parks within walking distance. Stroll 10 minutes and you can reach the 19th Century-designed Vondelpark or Amsterdam’s museum district that includes the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk and the historic canals. Restaurants, bars and shops are 200 meters away. Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport is a 20-minute car or taxi ride away. Car rental is not essential; bike rental is recommended.

Accommodation Details

The residence has 2 stories with the large open plan living room and kitchen-diner downstairs with access to the tiled garden. Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms – 3 are children’s rooms with high beds and ladder access, and 1 child’s bedroom also contains a toddler bed. The master bedroom has a kingsize bed, its own balcony and a view over the garden. There is a family bathroom with a bathtub and separate shower.

Style Notes

Bright and breezy. The spacious family house has painted white wooden floors, beautifully neutral décor and plenty of natural light. The garden is a pretty space to enjoy a morning coffee before setting out to explore the city. The many books and paintings on the walls give the place a homely, family vibe. We love the down-to-earth feel, the fun ladders for the kids to climb into bed and the open plan interior space.

Helmersbuurt, Amsterdam

Townhouses and juice cafés

This popular family neighborhood in western Amsterdam is a few blocks from the Vondelpark with some streets right on a canal plus cafés, restaurants and yoga studios nearby. It’s easy to walk or cycle to the center of the city along with the museum quarter, and it is a little more urban and edgy than some of the south Amsterdam districts.
