Perks for the Parents

This North Carolina mountain cabin has high ceilings, vintage furnishings and plenty to offer babies and children, with Highlands town just a short walk away. There is a real sense of character in this fabulous residence, where you can hear church bells from the rocking chair front porch, admire equestrian portraits on the walls and enjoy a roaring fire in winter. The hosts can recommend a babysitter who lives across the street, with a list of alternatives if she is not available. It’s easy to walk to Harris Lake for fishing and feeding the ducks.

Why Kids Love it

All ages will love the cabin but it's especially convenient for crib-aged kids. There is fenced yard and a large walk-in closet set up as a nursery with a Nuna Pack’n’Play, sound machine, Orbit activity center, Skip Hop foam floor tiles, lots of toys, Baby Trend stroller, and Boon bathtub. The stroller can transform from a bassinet to a full-sized jogging stroller. There are numerous outdoor activities to suit families in the area, from hiking, boat rental on Lake Glenville and waterfall trails to ice skating, bunny slopes and more in winter.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 days. Pets welcome. There are 2 dog parks in Highlands and a botanical center with nature trails. There are child-safe electrical outlets in the cabin, which is on 1 level. There are just 5 steps to the front porch. Young children may need supervision around the small 3-foot frog fountain behind the house. There is a stone hearth fireplace for sitting and roasting marshmallows. Car rental recommended. Bunny slopes are 20 minutes away; in summer tubing, boat rentals on Lake Glenville, and ice cream shops are popular.

About the Location

The residence is a short walk from the heart of Highlands, North Carolina. This beautiful mountain town has a 1950s feel with no chains on Main Street, and shops and restaurants galore. There is an open field and playground next door to the cabin plus a community pool and rec center with retractable roof nearby and ice skating rink in the winter. The nearest airports are Atlanta (just under 2.5 hours) and Charlotte (just under 3.5 hours away).

Style Notes

Vintage heaven. This stunning cabin centers around a great room with 20ft vaulted ceilings, shiplap and a wood burning fireplace, decorated with country flair. Antique wood windows let in the light while a clawfoot tub adds elegance to bathtime and a Wolf range makes cooking easy. Beds have memory foam bedding. We love the designer style and unique vintage items that make this cabin one of a kind.

We are a soon to be family of 7- a 17 year old, 1 year old, bun in the oven, and 2 rescue labs. We work our tails off and love relaxing travel. Among our favorites are San Francisco, wine country, and anywhere in Coastal California, Nantucket and the Cape, and of course our sanctuary in Highlands, NC.

Highlands, North Carolina

We’re going on a bear hunt

Highlands, North Carolina, is made for Instagram. This postcard-perfect town in the southern Appalachian mountains, due west of Charlotte and north of Atlanta, has an authentic high street of clapboard stores and houses, plenty of arts venues, and a whole trail of mountain waterfalls to explore. Visit in fall to discover the ‘Shadow of the Bear’, a bear-shaped shadow from Whiteside Mountain seen on sunny days from 5.30-6.15pm.
