Perks for the Parents

Once a fisherman's cottage, this traditional Île de Ré house is within walking distance to beaches, shops and local markets, and sleeps up to 8 + 1. Families can explore the public library, friendly creperie or small movie theater, and the 'manege' (horse riding arena) at the end of the street. Borrow bikes to explore the flat and beautiful island.

Why Kids Love it

The house is designed for all ages, with Lego, Playmobil, card games, books and art supplies to entertain the kids. The courtyard is perfect on sunny days and the living room has plenty of space for indoor play. The house is within walking distance to beaches and a small playground, with family-friendly eateries nearby. A crib and high chair are available.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. The house is safe for older children but please note that the spiral stairs to first floor are small, steep and unsafe for unsupervised small children. The fireplace requires adult supervision. Two adult bikes are available, and more can be rented from the local shop near the house. Local tips can be provided by the hosts; an outdoor BBQ, washer/dryer, dishwasher and WiFi is included. Car rental essential to access the island, but not on the island itself.

About the Location

An ideal location in the center of one of the most lovely and family-friendly villages in Île de Ré, the house is in La Couarde sur Mer in the heart of the island, within walking distance to shops, markets, restaurants, a lovely wine bar, beaches and family-friendly activities. There is a local public library, sailing school, creperie and small movie theater. It is about 25 minutes to La Rochelle Airport and 1 hour 50 minutes to Nantes-Atlantique International Airport.

Style Notes

Light and bright. This traditional Île de Ré village house is full of character and coastal charm, including local art, ancient stone walls and floors and antique doors. The open living spaces, modern spiral staircase and updated windows are a perfect refresh. We love crisp white linens and wall, green pops of color on the exterior and small village ambience.

We are a French/European family with 3 great kids who like to travel and discover. One of our favorite destinations is California... but it is far and we also love re-discovering France and the European cities with our younger explorers. We fell in love with ile de Re some years ago and are now owning and renting our house in our preferred village, La Couarde.

Île de Ré, Charente-Maritime

Beautiful beaches, country lanes and wildflower meadows

Just 30km long, this Atlantic Coast island has a supersized reputation for its quality of light, beautiful beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Popular with Parisians in the summer, its pine forests, golden beaches, pretty harbour towns and oyster beds are all easily reached by bicycle. Browse morning markets for treasures, eat ice creams on the beach and cycle or ride horses along country lanes beside fields of wildflowers and coastal views.
