Style Notes

This old Arab-style home has natural beams, soaring ceilings, stone floors and a modern kitchen. The light streams in through the high windows and it is beautiful. There is a blend of ancient and modern touches - a wall of Hamsa hand amulets, a nursery with bold monochrome printed wallpaper and plenty of tiling and white walls. We love the clean simple decor and the pops of bright color.

Susan was a gracious host and was very responsive to questions in advance of our stay. We were greeted by a very friendly neighbor who let us into the residence upon arrival. However, the description of the apartment and the photos were not quite accurate. In the photos the children's room had a crib, which we found out on arrival had been removed since the photos had been taken. So we had to go out to the store to buy a crib just after arriving (post 5 hour flight and taxi journey with 2 little kids, not ideal). In our prior correspondence with Susan we mentioned we had a 3.5 year old and an 11 month old (who would obviously require a crib for sleeping) but when we raised the issue after discovering there was no crib Susan said she didn't realize we would need one and mentioned that the photos online were out of date. She did offer to reimburse us for the cost of the crib but didn't really follow through and we didn't press the issue. Otherwise the apartment was comfortable and furnished nicely. Our older daughter loved the toys in the children's room and the apartment is architecturally very interesting and appealing with lots of light and extremely high ceilings. However, we did find the drawers and cupboards very full and messy, and much more "lived in" than we would have liked for a holiday rental. The apartment also could have been cleaner. Susan was on-hand throughout our stay to answer any questions via email, which was nice. On the whole, we had a pleasant stay, but wished the apartment had been cleaner and less cluttered.

Jaffa, Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv's ancient port

Also known as Yafo, Jaffa is one of the most ancient parts of Tel Aviv and has narrow streets, courtyards and an excess of atmosphere. The flea market is a popular haunt and the area's winding streets are home to unique boutiques and stores. Take the kids to the port, where fishermen still haul in a daily catch, then walk through Abrasha Park and take in the views before an afternoon at the beach.
