Perks for the Parents

This glorious house in the countryside, 15 minutes’ drive from Antwerp, is the setting for a superb family adventure, playing in the beautiful gardens, walking through meadows and exploring nature nearby. Sit in the glass conservatory and watch the kids play outside. There are horses and a donkey in the meadows next to the garden, and lovely walking routes to discover. There is a huge fireplace inside and several lovely terraces around the house, one with an outside fireplace so you can have dinner outside till fall. There is a swimming pond in the grounds and if you are lucky you can ice-skate there in winter.

Why Kids Love it

The garden isn’t just a great space to run around - there’s also a trampoline, a sand box, a slide, a skate ramp, a ping pong table and a kids pool in the summer. The house is set up with a kids bedroom with a play attic and sliding pole upstairs and a playroom downstairs with a Wii and PlayStation. The bathroom includes a huge bath that fits 3 kids under 10. Enjoy strolls together in the local area or visit one of 2 huge playgrounds nearby where you can have lunch inside while watching the kids play. A short drive or train ride brings you to beautiful Antwerp, where there are family-friendly restaurants, great museums, shopping and a fun zoo.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. Maximum guests: 6 adults. Note that there are some issues for those with young children: there is a mezzanine level where they should be supervised at all times. The stairs are gated; before the upper stair gate there is a split between the planks, and kids should be made aware of it. Stairs to the play attic can be removed for younger children. Taps in the house can get very hot, especially in the bath and kitchen sink, so kids must not touch the handles. Car rental is essential in this rural setting. Pets welcome; the owners have a dog, who will be away during your stay.

About the Location

This residence is in the small town of Kapellen, 15 minutes from Antwerp, and is surrounded by ponds, canals, meadows, little sluices and wooden bridges. There is a shopping center, restaurants and boutiques in Kapellen itself and a Carrefour supermarket a short drive away. In winter there is an ice skating rink in Kapellen en Brasschaat. Antwerp itself is great for families, with a beautiful medieval center, green spaces, fantastic bike paths, a revived riverfront, and new museums like the Red Star Line Museum. It can be reached by train from Kapellen, taking 12 minutes, and is easy to navigate on foot. Brussels airport is a 40-minute drive away.

Accommodation Details

This 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom house is surrounded by gardens and nature. The downstairs living space includes porches, a warm kitchen with a long table and a large glass conservatory, plus cozy lounge areas with fireplaces and a play room. There is a downstairs bedroom with queensize bed and ensuite bathroom plus doors to the garden and meadows. Upstairs there is master bedroom with connecting bathroom with large bath and walking closet. There is also a boys room with an antique queensize bed (smaller then a normal queensize bed) plus a play attic and sliding pole. Another kids room has 2 kids beds. In between these rooms there is a toilet and bathroom with rainshower and view of the forest. Next to the garage there is a little side house with 1 bedroom with a single bed. There is also a very nice sleeping couch that is light weight so easy to move in the side house, plus a toddler / baby bed with bars.

Style Notes

Rural retreat. This rustic country house is set in a beautiful estate surrounded by nature. All rooms are set up so you can see the woods and meadows around you, with deer, rabbits and foxes to spot. The wooden chalet room has a huge fireplace and the kitchen with a characterful long table so everyone can enjoy cooking and eating together. Cozy and welcoming, the house is great for kids and has a relaxed bohemian air. We love the beautiful glass conservatory, where you can relax while watching the kids play, the vast number of toys to play with, and the location, close to a wonderful culture-filled city and backing on to meadows filled with wildlife.

We had a wonderful family and friends experience in this beautiful house and the stunning surrounding. Everything was even more amazing than described. Minouk was a very friendly host, the communication was always nice and helpful. The description of the house and her recommendations for restaurants e.g. were perfect! Thanks a lot! Warmly recommended!

We had a fantastic stay at the Kapellen Residence. It was a great place to get away from city life and we enjoyed the comfort of the home, as well as the expansive yard, trampoline, slide, sand box, etc. that were great for the kids. The grounds were also beautiful, and it was wonderful to explore the beautiful forest and hiking trails around the house. The only issue we had was that the heater didn't work, but Minouk was very quick to help us address it and get it fixed. Also, we had a 10-month-old traveling with us, and although he loved crawling around the grass outside and exploring the toys in the kids' rooms, the house wasn't the best for a crawling baby, as there were quite a few places inside where there are steps. Overall though, we had an amazing stay!

Meadows, canals and castles
