Perks for the Parents

This Big Coppitt Key home, 10 miles from Key West, has an 80s vibe and plenty for kids, including a sea wall to fish and/or dive off. Owned by parents of young children, it is well set up for a family stay, with a queen and twin bed in the main bedroom, a pack’n’play in the closet and some little kids toys and books always around. The property is right on the water, with a seawall to fish off. The local Kmart has a great fishing department for the travelling fisherman/ fishermom/ fisherkid.

Why Kids Love it

There is a carpeted living room and bedroom to offer soft landings for kids. If your older children can swim, there is nothing better than floating in the canal and diving off the seawall (great for big kids too); it also has a hammock. Right on the canal, there is plenty to look at and watch, including boats. There is a large private porch for laying out in the sun and quiet star-gazing. Within a 30-minute drive you can be on the white sands of Higgs Beach and Fort Zachary Taylor state park.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. The apartment is up a set of stairs and there is a open seawall, so children will have to be supervised outside if they aren't good swimmers. There is a mezzanine gallery accessed by a ladder - young children should be supervised around it and not allowed to climb it. Car rental essential. On the ground floor under the house, there is a studio apartment and small lounge area. The studio is available on request for an extra fee.

About the Location

The property is on Big Coppitt Key, 10 miles from Duval Street, Key West, which is close enough for easy day trips, and not so far away from the convenience of bigger stores. It is 15-20 minutes from the airport. Downtown Key West is 10 miles away, so you can catch sunset at Mallory Square and still have a reasonable bedtime; being outside Key West offers a little more peace and quiet.

Accommodation Details

This canal-front duplex has 2 huge bedrooms, each with attached baths on either side of a great room with vaulted ceilings and fisherman's kitchen. Attached to the canal-side bedroom is a large private porch. The street side bedroom also has a shared balcony and its bathroom boasts an incredible wide bathtub. For groups of 6 or 7, a small studio apartment with a double bed and full bath can also be made available. Below the house is a small enclosure that is perfect for hanging out in at night.

Style Notes

Eighties retro. The owners have created a 1980s vibe that will have you mixing cocktails as the sun goes down, with vintage furnishings to add to the feel. The low profile couch is a child’s favorite and makes for easy fort-making. Lobster trap artwork and Conch Republic themed prints stay true to the Key West vibe. The owner’s wife grew up on the same street as this unique property and it’s a special, quirky and characterful place to stay. We love the personality, the location and the nautical theme.

My wife and I have been based in Brooklyn for the last decade and in the past few years we have had 2 incredible boys. We are so thrilled to be able to share our homes. It has expanded our lives but also allowed us to share our style and sense of adventure with others.

Key West, Florida

Sunsets and the sea

Whether it’s watching wild dolphins frolic in the waves, touring mangroves on a stand up paddle board, showing little kids a first view of the ocean from a glass bottomed boat, or petting a shark at the Key West Aquarium, this part of Florida is going to make you fall in love with the sea. With white sand to dig in and relax on at Higgs Beach and Fort Zachary Taylor and museums and natural attractions from the Key West Shipwreck Museum to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, kids of all ages will be entertained.
