Perks for the Parents

This spacious Los Feliz home has a huge garden with plenty of space to play and is close to many of kid-friendly sites, particularly Griffith Park, the Silver Lake Meadow, Downtown LA, Universal Studios, and Hollywood. Set on over 18,000 sq feet, the house includes beautiful living spaces, architectural flourishes, a playroom and an incredible garden where a sand box is built into a former grotto and a play structure entertains kids. The house is on a cul-de-sac close to the west end of Griffith Park and has little car traffic. The house is close to many family attractions, and the nearest beach is 30 minutes away.

Why Kids Love it

The house is beautifully set up for kids of all ages, with equipment available for babies and plenty of toys and games for younger and older kids. The block is filled with nice families and lots of friendly dogs. The play room has a play kitchen and plenty of books; kids bedrooms are colorful and toy-filled, and even the grown up, wood-panelled dining room has playful cardboard animal heads. There are twin and toddler-sized blow up mattresses that can be added to the kids' bedrooms as well. The garden includes a playhouse; toddlers may need supervision in it.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 6 days. There is a baby gate at the bottom of the main staircase; stairs leading from the terrace to the garden are not gated. A housekeeper will come every Monday, and a gardener will come every Wednesday. The owners have a dog, who will be away during guest stays. The house has WiFi, an elliptical machine, a ping pong table, Apple TV, DVD players, and lots of toys and games. For babies and toddlers, the owners can provide a Pack’n’Play, high chair, baby bath and other baby items. There are rock structures in the backyard which were designed by the architect who built the LA Zoo. An electric charger car can be made available on consultation with the host.

About the Location

The residence is in Los Feliz, just south of Griffith Park. It is on a quiet cul-de-sac in Los Feliz Square, one of the nicest neighborhoods in Los Feliz. Filled with great restaurants, vegan bakeries, kid-friendly parks, and low-key celebrity estates, Los Feliz is like the Park Slope of Los Angeles. There are many kid-friendly sites nearby, including the Silver Lake Meadow, Downtown LA, Hollywood, Los Feliz Village and Universal Studios. It is within walking distance of the west end of Griffith Park (the house is basically right underneath the Observatory). Without traffic, it is about 45 minutes from LAX, 30 minutes from the beach, and 40 minutes from Disneyland.

Style Notes

Large, elegant and bright. This 1925 Tudor-style house retains plenty of its original charm, in a dark wood-panelled dining room and living room with imposing stone fireplace. Unlike many Tudors, the house is bright and airy and the contemporary touches make it a fun family space. The decor is eclectic, with both modern and antique elements throughout.

Hi, I'm Erica Rothschild and I live in Los Feliz, CA with my husband and two children. We have a great, family-friendly, 4600 square-foot Tudor on a cul-de-sac with a big back yard. I work for the Walt Disney Company and my hobbies include... well, right now, I have no time for hobbies because I have two small children. But I am finding some time to travel!

Los Feliz, Los Angeles

1950s diners and vintage boutiques

Los Feliz is an upmarket hillside enclave near the Hollywood Hills in north-central LA. With wide boulevards, architect-designed buildings and affluent residents, it's a desirable place to be. The main drag isn't all about money though: expect to find vintage shops, 1950s boutiques and retro-styled diners made for slurping a $5 shake.
