Perks for the Parents

This spacious, stately, color-filled home is heaven for children, a short walk from the Jurassic coast for fossil hunting, with a tree house, croquet lawn and plenty more to keep everyone happy. Look no further for a family gathering spot that everyone will remember for years to come. From the huge kitchen to the gym, summer house, fire bowl and barbecue, the house is overflowing with items that make parents happy; located 4 miles from River Cottage and a short drive from Hix in Lyme Regis itself, foodies will get the best of the area by staying here. The décor is outstanding, the historic nature of the house is captivating; it is a uniquely eccentric English pad overall. There is a brand new spa featuring a sauna, a hotter, a plunge pool and a relaxing area overlooking the hills down to the sea.

Why Kids Love it

Whether your children are young or old, there is plenty to entertain them. There is a massive trampoline, a fully enclosed (hedged) garden, a tree house, a summerhouse, a fountain, a herb garden and many place to play hide and seek. Toys and games include a table tennis table, electric scooters, bikes, normal scooters, trees to climb, a croquet lawn, sprinklers to run through, a water hole to discover and a pond with newts. The nearby Jurassic coast is famed for its fossils; Lyme Regis has rocky and sandy beaches, coastal paths, hidden beaches, a tramway and seaside delights including fish’n’chips, ice creams and mini golf courses.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 6 days. Rates do not include heating costs which are applied separately in addition at a rate of £120 per week. The house has stairs but no stair gates; there is a tree house in the grounds where young children may need supervision. The house has an open fire in the sitting room and a wood burner in the hallway, plus a huge wood supply. There are plenty of outdoor parking spaces. Tesco and Waitrose deliver to the property and River Cottage is only 4 miles away. There are plenty of farm shops and local organic meat in the freezer. Pets are welcome by arrangement.

The 7 bedrooms include 1 with kingsize bed, 3 with queensize beds, 1 with fullsize/double bed, 1 with bunk beds and 1 with 2 twin beds. Style Notes

Grand, colourful and eccentric. This house, dating to 1840, is huge with cozy corners, patterned fabrics and beautiful wallpaper throughout. There is plenty of space for a large family group with window cushions to help enjoy the views through the leaded windows and a mix of old and new throughout. Mattresses are Savoir and ViSpring and there are good quality linens and towels throughout. We love the William Morris wallpaper in the kitchen, the wood panelling and the sensational double height living room.

I'm German and my husband is British. Our kids are 13 and 11. We like to travel to Europe and we have been to India over Christmas and are off to Bali for 4 weeks. We have 2 dogs, the house is dog-friendly as long as the dogs don't sleep in your bed. My husband is an author of many books and works with boards on how to inject energy and creativity into their businesses I work with companies who want to have more women at the top all over the world, We use our house as a venue for small groups and the house is equipped like a luxury hotel to cook and cater for lots of guests.

This property is family heaven. We had three families stay here for a week and we all had the most wonderful time. The only problem was that the children loved playing around the house and outside in the incredible grounds that they never wanted to leave and explore Devon/Dorset! The kitchen has everything you could possibly need, the bedrooms are all well sized and very comfortable. The grounds are vast. There are swings, a trampoline, a big treehouse and even a fire pit and BBQ. Anna the host couldn't be more friendly and helpful. We would all highly recommend Rhode Hill Residence!

Lyme Regis, Dorset

Beaches and buried fossils

East of Exeter and west of Weymouth, slap in the middle of England’s Jurassic coastline, Lyme Regis is a town that’s never short of visitors. Be sure to visit the local Blue Lias cliffs and the medieval lepers well, then swing your legs from the iconic harbour or cobb wall, making sure the seagulls don’t fly off with your ice cream.
