Perks for the Parents

This Ed Niles-designed beach house with incredible light, views, and plenty for kids sits on a secluded sandy cove in West Malibu. It sleeps up to 6 comfortably and 8 upon request. The cove is secluded but located near plenty of popular beaches, parks and surf spots. The house consists of 2 levels, each with its own kitchen-diner and living room so would work well for 2 families, an extended family traveling together, or a family with a nanny. Family life is easy here with an enclosed hot shower near the steps to the beach, plus a half bathroom nearby. You can leave your beach stuff at home: beach chairs, towels and sand toys are all here.

Why Kids Love it

This beach house is located on a magnificent cove. Depending on the tides and waves, it’s a perfect place for swimming, SUP paddle boarding, bodysurfing, surfing, fishing, boogie boarding, kayaking, sailing, kitesurfing, skim boarding, and scuba diving. Boogie boards, sand toys, games and books are provided and there are surf shops and surf camps nearby. Malibu and the big-ticket attractions of LA are around an hour’s drive away. The upstairs kingsize bed converts to 2 single / twin beds if required.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. Max capacity is 6 people, with 8 people possible upon request and with an additional fee of $100/person per night. The host is required to collect a 12% Malibu City Transient Occupancy Tax directly from renters, which applies to rents, cancellation fees, pet fees and cleaning fees. The downstairs unit is accessible by wheelchair. Drawers, cabinets and coffee tables are not currently baby-proofed. Families with young children and toddlers should take note that the upstairs bedrooms are at a mezzanine level with un-gated stairs and the balcony over the patio is not suitable for unsupervised babies or toddlers. House-trained dogs are okay if approved in advance and additional $50 is charged for cleaning (cats are not permitted). Guests are advised to keep dogs off the furniture or provide slipcovers. The house is not air conditioned but stays cool as it's right off the beach. A 2-car garage and additional off-street parking are included, as is WiFi. Hosts can help to hire a car, chef, bartender, yoga instructor, massage specialist or housekeeper.

About the Location

This residence is located right on the beach in the secluded enclave of Blue Whale Estates in West Malibu, accessed via a private road off the Pacific Coast Highway. It is about 5 minutes to the nearest market, restaurant, bank, cafe, boutiques, surf shop and cleaners. It's about 19 minutes to Downtown Malibu, Adamson House and the Malibu Pier. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Burbank Airport are both approximately an hour’s ride, depending on traffic. Popular local attractions aside from the idyllic beach the house is set on include Charmlee Wilderness Park and Leo Carillo State Park, where you can find hiking trails and picnic spots. Universal Studios, Disneyland, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Hollywood are all a close drive for more exploring.

Accommodation Details

This modern 2-bedroom, 3-bathroom beach house has 2 floors, each with its own kitchen and fireplace. The upstairs level has an open concept kitchen / dining / living room overlooking the beach, 1 kingsize master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, and 1 bedroom with 2 twin / single beds. Downstairs sliding glass doors open to the large patio with stairs to the beach. If needed there is a convertible full sofa bed and a queen tempurpedic mattress. The residence is located on a private drive accessed by a security gate and there is a security intercom. Guests are also entitled to park off the road on one half of the private parking lot co-owned by the beach house adjacent, which is very rare in Malibu.

Style Notes

Malibu beauty. Designed by renowned architect Ed Niles, this house makes extensive use of steel, glass walls and travertine flooring upstairs. High above the great room there's a full-width glass cathedral ceiling. There are fully equipped granite-topped kitchens upstairs and down. The modern decor is eclectic, and most of the lounging furniture upstairs is leather. We love the sunsets, the surfboard mounted on the wall, and the view from that looks right out over the ocean.

The property on this beautiful cove was purchased by the owners' grandparents in 1948, to create a family retreat. Owned by two brothers since 2010, the late 20th Century house is being lovingly maintained for the family. The owners are happy to share this special place with other families who will likewise appreciate its sublime beauty.

Beaches, canyons and film sets

Malibu has starred in so many films, TV shows and music videos that it needs its own Equity card. Get ready to snap the kids playing on the beach from Planet of the Apes - or if they’re tweens, the spot where One Direction shot a video. The beaches here are wonderful and you’re sure to find a quiet spot somewhere; don’t miss hiking the canyons (there are even stroller-friendly walks), buying kitsch souvenirs on Malibu Pier and watching surfers ride big waves.
