Perks for the Parents

This Martha’s Vineyard home has gorgeous ocean views and access to a private beach and Lucy Vincent Beach via a canoe. It comes with everything you need for small kids and a relaxed family getaway and sleeps up to 8 + 2. You can kick back knowing everything’s been taken care of here. Two child life jackets are included for the canoe as well as beach toys, beach towels, 2 standup paddleboards, boogie boards and beach chairs. Grill up a feast on the outdoor deck overlooking the ocean, eat seafood at Menemsha Harbor, or paddle to the best beach on the island.

Why Kids Love it

The kids will love the beaches. The residence has plenty of toys and books for children under age 10 and a huge living room for playing and watching movies after a fun day outdoors. The property has a large grass lawn for playing games. The house comes with a travel crib, full-sized crib, high chair and a play kitchen. Other toys can be provided on request. Bring bikes to explore the island’s safe paths, try lobster and fresh clams, bodysurf and swim, explore the many beaches or drive to the other side of the island to visit Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs (the oldest operating platform carousel in the country).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights. There is 1 flight of stairs leading to the bedrooms upstairs with baby gates installed. A flight of stairs leads to the basement without a gate but there is a door that can be kept closed. The private beach is walkable, but probably not achievable for children under 5. There is parking available to access the private beach and the hosts provide parking stickers for Chilmark public beaches, so driving with kids is easy. Guests will need a car to get around and enjoy the area. Mid-week cleaning / a maid service can be arranged upon request. No pets. Each room has individually controlled, extremely quiet A/C units for hot summer nights.

About the Location

The residence is located 4 minutes from downtown Chilmark on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. From the house you can walk to a private pond and canoe to a private beach and / or Lucy Vincent beach (the best beach on Martha's Vineyard). It’s a 2-minute walk to the Fulling Mill Brook Nature Preserve and land bank trails for running and hiking. A 5-minute drive will take you to Alley's General Store in West Tisbury, the Chilmark Store or to the picturesque Menemsha Harbor. Get to Martha’s Vineyard by ferry from Wood’s Hole, MA (about 45 minutes) or take a plane from JFK during peak summer (about 1 hr).

Accommodation Details

This ocean house has 4 beds and 3 baths and is set over 3 stories. On the main level is a full-sized kitchen and family-sized dining tables seating 6 inside and about 8 outside. Also on this level are 2 bedrooms: 1 queensize master bedroom with attached bathroom, including a walk-in steam shower and 1 queensize with a bathroom with a tub. Upstairs are 2 more queensize bedrooms and a family bathroom with a shower and heated floors. There is also an office with a view of the ocean with a twin / single bed. The basement includes a washer and dryer. Outside is a large deck leading off the kitchen, a private deck and shower for the master suite, 1 guest outdoor shower, a Weber grill and a large lawn.

Style Notes

Relaxed ocean living. This beach home is in a great location – tucked away and yet close to civilization if you want to explore it. It has uninterrupted views over to the ocean. Inside, it’s modern with antique touches and Restoration Hardware furniture and linens. The kitchen is sleek in gray with white countertops; there are beachy wood walls in the living room and dark hardwood floors throughout. Bedrooms are painted white and natural light engulfs each room. We love that this place comes with its own family canoe, the views (of course) and the back deck where you can relax and enjoy the sunsets.

Tanglevine (the family name for the home) is a family property. The Hunt/Friedman family include: Caroline, her husband, her two young children, her mother (Nana) and her brothers. They all spend as much time as they can at Tanglevine, especially in the wonderful summer months.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

This idyllic summer haven off the coast of Cape Cod still feels like old time Americana with farm stands, comfortable inns, local fairs and parades, and some superb state beaches. Rent bikes and cruise around the island’s quiet roads, catch a ride on the historic Flying Horses Carousel at Oak Bluffs, marvel at winged creatures at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, and enjoy cold treats from the many ice-cream stands. Pleasures here are wonderfully simple.
