Perks for the Parents

This unique octagonal house is built around a redwood tree in a forest and is near Mendocino in the wilds of Northern California. It sleeps up to 5 + 1. There is plenty of family-friendly fun to be had here in Mendocino, from a gentle path through the woods on this property, or any one of the numerous hikes throughout the state parks. Big River Beach is only 1.5 miles from the house and here you can rent a paddleboard, canoe or kayak and be on the look out for blue herons. Downtown, there are numerous music, film and art festivals, kid-friendly cafés and interesting stores to discover.

Why Kids Love it

If the kids have ever read Enid Blytons’ Faraway Tree books or Elsa Beskow's "Children of the Forest", they’ll adore staying in this tree-topped house. The residence surrounds the majestic trunk of a redwood tree and there are views of the woods from every room in the house. The surrounding trees are an endless source of fascination for kids. In the summer there are butterflies everywhere and in November, the mushrooms pop up. Around the house is a grassy meadow for outdoor play. There are toys and books for children under 5, a smart TV in both bedrooms and WiFi.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. The cabin has a deck with multiple stairs and there are drop-offs. Baby gates have been installed but always look after little ones. Additionally, these woods do have wildlife including deer, raccoons, skunks, and bears. The house comes with a Bloom mini-crib for babies, a Joovy Pack ’n’ Play for toddlers and a bathtub inside, and outside too. There is a safety screen on the gas-powered fireplace.

About the Location

The residence is set in an acre of woodland, 1.5 miles outside the historic seaside village of Mendocino, California, which has multiple grocers, restaurants, post office, yoga and Pilates studios, spas and art galleries. The house is just under 4 hours north of San Francisco and north-west of Sacramento, where the nearest airports are located. Car hire is essential.

Accommodation Details

The residence has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and is set on 1 level. The living room has a gas fireplace and the kitchen is fully equipped and includes child-friendly tableware. There is a master bedroom with a kingsize bed and a children’s room that sleeps 3 in bunkbeds. There is also a full family bathroom with a tub and shower. Outside space includes a large outdoor deck with seating, chairs around a fire pit, a grassy meadow, the woods and an outdoor bathroom with cast-iron clawfoot tub and shower.

Style Notes

Rustic beauty. This stunning and fun Northern Californian cabin was originally built in 1971 and has been thoughtfully updated. The redwood tree at the heart of the house continues to grow and thrive and will surely outlive the house. The furnishings are mid-century modern with a healthy dash of rustic Northern California bohemia. We love the cozy feel, the stone fireplace and wood beams, the central atrium, and the bright yellow front door and fairy lights that give the place an enchanted air.

Our family holiday in the tree house was something we’ll never forget. The home was perfectly designed and so comfortable for all of us, and the kids had the time of their lives. The outdoor bath was the perfect way to enjoy the redwoods with a glass of wine after the kids had gone to bed. This is a very special home in a very special place.

first time in mendocino and we had such a wonderful stay, largely due to this beautiful cozy home. my kiddo loved the redwood that the house was built around, playing in the backyard (wagon rides!), and all the wonderful toys/books available. the adults especially loved the fire pit at night (there was firewood available for us to use). Dana was such a wonderful host -- quickly responds to any questions and was very accommodating/flexible. we will definitely be back!

The Little Lake Road treehouse was the perfect spot for our weekend getaway. Despite the rain, we found plenty to do in and around Mendocino - and coming back to the treehouse was perfect. Our 5 year old daughter had nightly dance parties with the instruments provided, and loved all of the toys in the kid's room. The kitchen had everything we needed for nightly meals, and the dining room table was just the spot for a game (or 10) of Uno every morning. We will definitely stay here again. Thank you, Dana!

Our whole family LOVED the Little Lake Road Residence. The house was beautifully appointed and we enjoyed sitting by the fire, playing all the games in the house, making music with the available instruments, bathing under the redwoods in the outdoor bathtub, taking property walks and of course exploring Mendocino. There were plenty of toys and games to keep the kids entertained, and when they weren't making music or playing Clue, they loved talking about how there was a redwood tree IN THE HOUSE! We are already planning our next getaway!

We had a wonderful time at the Little Lake Road Residence. I still have a high from the great family time shared in this unique house. Highlights include the amazing Redwood that the house is surrounded by; the octagon shape of the house which lends to separate sleeping spaces; the outside tub and shower amongst nature; the spacious deck; and the proximity to amenities and beautiful nature! The house is very well set-up for a family, my son took straight away to the toys and the books. It was nice to not have to bring a pack n play and toys. I loved the tea bar and the cozy fire and my husband loved the fire pit outside. The stars are so clear! The place was clean, tidy and with lovely decorative touches. We plan to be back!

This was a wonderful stay and just such a magical experience. The decor is kid friendly and well very curated at the same time. This house tucked away in the woods was just what we needed - close enough to town but also with enough privacy for it to feel like a getaway. You get to see the redwoods and breathe in all the forest air while having the luxury of kid conveniences like cribs and high chairs. Having the comfort of a home as we travelled with our young child was such a great experience. I highly recommend this home.
