Perks for the Parents

This colorful apartment with a hammock and playhouse in the garden is in one of Mexico City’s most desirable family neighborhoods. There is a park and playground only a block away and everything you might need is walking distance; the hosts even have an extra stroller with a large basket for you to shop for groceries or take the kids for a picnic in Chapultepec park. The house is equipped for families, especially ones with younger kids. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and family-sized dining space with a high chair. The main bedroom has a large bathtub, and a view to the garden so you can wake up to the sound of chirping birds and the sight of bougainvillea, hummingbirds and butterflies every morning.

Why Kids Love it

The residence has plenty of toys and books for kids under 10, a tipi in the kid's room and a corridor large enough for wheeled toys. There is a hammock and a playhouse in the back garden, which children love. It is a short walk from local playgrounds, and the kids room is bright and colorful. A crib, high chair, baby toys and a baby bath can be provided on request. A bike with a child seat is also available.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 days. To access the house, you have to go up 1 flight of stairs. There is a second, smaller entrance through the garage. The flat is a 2 level duplex, so there are stairs inside the apartment. A gate can be put up upon request. There is parking space for 1 car, right outside the property.

About the Location

The residence is in the west-central district of Condesa, considered to be one of the city’s most fashionable districts, especially among young businesspeople, artists, students and families. Its character has been compared to that of the Soho in New York and the Latin Quarter in Paris. Avenues are wide and lined with trees; while streets are mostly residential they also include many restaurants, cafés, boutiques and art galleries. Some of these shops include the Rosario Castellanos bookstore, which includes a cáfe, an auditorium theatre and a children's room, café Lardo by one of the most renowned chefs in the city, and Contramar restaurant with the best seafood in the city. Most of the bars and cafes are concentrated along Amsterdam and Michoacán avenues. The area is residential (so very quiet), and only a short walking distance to all services like metro, metrobus, supermarkets, Chapultepec, Parque Mexico and Parque España parks. Mexico City’s airport is around 20 minutes’ drive away, depending on traffic.

Accommodation Details

This 2-bedroom duplex apartment has a master bedroom with queen bed and garden view, a second bedroom with twin bed and a living room with an extra twin bed. There is a fully equipped kitchen plus washing machine, and a large table for dining/work, plus packed bookshelves. There are 2 bathrooms, 1 with tub and 1 with shower. The terrace is accessed from the main bedroom. The small garden includes a hammock and play house. The duplex apartment is in a building with only 4 apartments, and the neighbors are friendly and respectful.

Style Notes

Contemporary Mexico. The building dates from 2000, and inside the decor is bright, light and modern. The house itself was renovated when the owners started a family, and was designed with children in mind. We love the Mexican fabrics in the bedroom, the joyful art throughout and the views of the garden.

We are a couple with two very young girls. I am from Mexico City, where we live, and Theo is from Athens, Greece (not Georgia!). We have two daughters: Alpha and Zoe. Theo and I met in London where we lived together for a few years. We try to go to Greece once a year for a few weeks every summer to see the family and friends, but also like going back to London as much as we can, and to travel the world. I'm always thinking about holidays, as Theo always points out!

Mexico City, Mexico

Ancient civilizations and modern-day marvels

Mexico City is crammed with things to do with the kids, with parks, public spaces, museums and ancient history to amaze and enthral them, even before you get to hot chocolate and churros. Get to Teotihuacán early and climb its sun and moon pyramids before the crowds get there; visit the outstanding National Museum of Anthropology to get a deeper view on Aztec culture, and don’t miss Xochimilco, the floating gardens of Mexico City, where mariachi bands play on boats and food boats sell empanadas. Mega playground Kidzania, and the Papalote Museo del Nino, where kids can learn about eco-friendly living and step inside a giant rainforest tree, are just a couple of the other child-focused places to play and learn in the city.
