Perks for the Parents

This bright, beautiful villa with a shared community pool, set in an old coconut plantation 2.5 hours north of Puerto Vallarta, is the perfect place for a relaxing vacation with the kids, where you can run barefoot all day. The area is quiet without a booming nightlife or tourism industry and fairly remote. It is a short walk through tropical gardens to a pristine beach. There is a daily cleaner and a cook who makes delicious local fresh food for children and adults alike, available for an additional fee. Relax in a hammock while the kids build sandcastles, watch wildlife or take to the waves on a kayak or boogie board.

Why Kids Love it

It is a short walk for little legs through the palm trees to the beach, where kids with find nothing but waves, sand and blue skies. From August to October, sea turtles lay their eggs here and guests can help the turtle camp gather eggs from nests. From November to January, the group allow guests to release baby turtles into the ocean. The pool has a 2 shallow ends and is great for young swimmers. The TV has Netflix. Parents should be advised to bring their own card games, art supplies, books etc. Beach toys, boogie boards and buckets and spades are provided. High chair and Pack 'n' Play provided.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights, bookable Saturday-Saturday only. For stays over Christmas and New Year, a stay combining both holidays will require a 12-night minimum. The residence is in a remote area of coastal Mexico which appeals to a more adventurous family traveler. Younger children will need supervision: there is an ungated pool, ungated stairs and steps and the ocean on the doorstep. The cook (optional but highly recommended) costs $30/day for adults, $10-20 for kids, including all food costs. You can choose no days, all days or anything inbetween. The primary grocery stores - Costco, Walmart and Mega - are in Puerto Vallarta; the staff can shop for fresh local goods for you nearby. Provisions provided otherwise are basic. Phone and WiFi can be intermittent. There is kayak hire nearby.

About the Location

The property is 80 miles north of Puerto Vallarta airport with an optional shuttle service. Car hire can be arranged and there is parking, but it is not strictly necessary. It is set in a coconut grove with a quiet, secluded beach a short walk away and there is very little nearby by way of nightlife, tourism and restaurants. Nearby activities include the beach, kayaking, boogie boarding, horseback riding and wildlife watching. Puerto Vallarta is the closest major town and is approximately a 2.5 hours’ drive away. Breaking up the journey with a visit to Punta Mita or Sayulita is a good option.

Accommodation Details

This 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom residence has a pool, tropical gardens and semi-outdoor lounge/dining areas. The inside features a kitchen and indoor lounge with board games plus 3 double bedrooms, 2 with kingsize beds and an ensuite bathroom and the other with a queensize bed. One bedroom is on the ground floor with direct access to the veranda. There is a separate bathroom. There is a semi-outdoor lounge with a palapa roof on the second level, accessed by outdoor steps.

Style Notes

Bright and welcoming. The orange-colored villa is bright, spacious and stylish with tiling to keep it cool and high ceilings. It is designed for indoor-outdoor living with lounge/dining spaces on the veranda with views of the gardens. We love the views, the coconut grove setting and restorative and unspoilt coastline, miles away from big resorts. Most meals are taken outside and the expansive grounds leave lots of room for children to be independent and explore.

Where to begin... My wife and I live in Seattle and stumbled upon a small, new beach community 2.5 hours north of Puerto Vallarta called, Playa Las Tortugas. We purchased a house there and started managing rentals for a number of the other homes. It's been a great excuse to need to take "business trips" down to the beach with our 5-year-old to check in on things. Kid and Coe is a wonderful platform and always sends us the best guests. We love taking care of families with kids as we know (first hand) how wonderful it can be to take a vacation when all the little details have been considered and worked out! Hit us up if you want a great trip to a tropical paradise...it'll be an adventure you'll remember! :-)

Playa las Tortugas, Riviera Nayarit

Mangroves, coconuts and turtles

Turtle Beach is a beautiful 8-mile long stretch of golden sand on the coast of Nayarit, around 2.5 hours from Puerto Vallarta. Home to endangered sea turtles, it is unspoilt and pristine, with protected mangrove estuaries, former coconut plantations and quiet coastal communities. A local wildlife protection organization can brief the kids on turtle conservation, and you can play on the beach for much of the day without seeing a single soul beyond the local wildlife.

We had a fantastic stay at Playa las Tortugas, where we stayed with four adults and two toddlers. It was well worth the trip and the kids loved playing on the almost entirely empty (!) beach and in the multiple swimming pools. There was ample place for them to run around barefoot on the grass just outside the house. The house has stairs but was generally quite kid-friendly (bonus points for the outdoor shower which was essential after a trip to the beach). The house was extremely clean and well-kept (there is housekeeping every day but Sunday). We opted for the meal plan and were so happy we did as the food was delicious! Participating in the turtle release was a very special moment during our stay. Overall, a fabulous trip! We can't wait to go back :-)

Getting here was a bit of a drive (an interesting one!) but well worth it. This is not a fancy resort but nor is it living it rough. It is a unique spot. The house was incredible clean and well kept. The layout had lots of private and communal spots both inside and out. The fans were lovely (we never once turned on the AC) and the views to the palm trees and the ocean beyond were lovely. The pictures are good but don't entirely it justice. Wonderful decorations, nothing feels worn or outdated. There are two pools that our kids played in constantly. They were clean and pretty warm -- watch out of "no see'um" bugs around dusk, though. We also released baby turtles into the ocean, played on the beach, rode horses, paddled kayaks -- all arranged by our hosts as needed. We also did a lot of nothing because it felt right. We paid for the full meal package for all days and ate wonderful, delicious, diverse food everyday. There are only two meals a day but we did just fine with that. We had stopped at Mega (kind of like Costco) to stock up beforehand and leftovers from previous meals filled in the rest. We never went hungry. We really can't wait to go back! What a treat!

A perfect family escape. Seamless airport transfer, well-manicured/clean community which never felt busy even when full, well-appointed 3 bedroom home 100 steps to beautiful, family-friendly beach (especially at low tide) which easily accommodated 6 adults & 2 kids under 5. Community staff attentive, reachable but non-intrusive. Staff provide prompt grocery service and/or tasty meal service. Day trips (e.g. San Pancho, Sayulita, etc) easy to arrange and feasible (1.5h one-way). We will definitely return soon.

For my wife Jacquelyn, myself and our 2 year old daughter the Palmeras Residence was the vacation of a lifetime. Looking at the photos you think, it can't be this great. The pool walking distance? The beach in sight at all times? The gorgeous vistas? The well-appointed house?! But it's all true and all wonderful. If you choose to have the staff cook for you, and you're on vacation, why wouldn't you, it's more than ample and delicious and such a nice treat to have meals prepared and have no clean-up afterwards. In addition to all the house has to offer, the three bedrooms and fine entertainment system and ample outdoor sitting and hanging area, the pool you are looking at is an excellent 65' lap pool. And if you're a runner or a person who likes to know how far you've run or walked there are km markings along the beach every .5 km for the walks or runs you might do there or on the road out as well. Yes, it's a 3.5 hour haul to get there if you stop and shop on the way and it is remote but that's the charm. And if you adventure to Platitos - it's a pretty fun little town for a beer and a lobster. There are bugs and no-see-ums which come out at night so just be prepared with some bug spray - other than that truly heaven on earth.

We loved our stay at the Palmeras Residence. Eli, the host, was beyond gracious and welcoming and helped provide quick answers to all of our questions. We arrived after a terrible storm had left the roads very challenging, but there was a delicious homemade meal waiting for us and when we woke the next morning we were in a sunny paradise. The Palmeras is located on a beachfront compound of lovely private-owned homes, with a shared pool. There was a lot of privacy and the beach was often ours alone. Our kids had fun playing in the pool with the other children, and we even released baby turtles into the sea, which was absolutely amazing and a special memory for the kids. We had breakfast and lunch prepared daily, and the food was perfect-simple enough for the children to enjoy but with all the local delicacies you would want to enjoy in Mexico. A few notes: it is remote and can be described as 'off the grid'. My family loves this kind of environment but it's not a kids club or bland luxury kind of atmosphere. Our children loved roaming the expansive lawns and had a lot of independence and freedom as the grounds are so contained. We suggest utilizing the chef services and making a stop at a grocery store to stock up on food and necessary items uponarrival. Thank you Eli and the team at Tortugas. We will be back soon!
