Perks for the Parents

This aristocratic house with a pool is located in Tuscany’s largest spa town, with hot springs and more to enjoy nearby. The house dates to the 19th Century and is in a historic fortified village and surrounded by a luxuriant garden. Giuseppi Verdi spent his holidays in this villa, fascinated and inspired by the lights and colors of this part of Tuscany. With grand yet comfortable rooms, inspiring gardens and a pool with panoramic views of the region, it’s a great place to stay as a family. The bedroom layout makes it easy for more than one family to vacation together.

Why Kids Love it

The villa is very suitable for families with children and has a pool and spacious gardens. The pool is only accessible by a gate and so it is safe; fun for kids, it is accessed via a rocky passageway. Bedrooms are mainly on the first floor with a private room in the tower (great for older children) and 2 bedrooms on the basement level. It is in a very quiet area without cars, and is a few minutes’ walk to the center of the village. The funicular running into Montecatini Terme is great for kids: a little train that chugs up the mountain and to the top of the village.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days, Saturday-Saturday. Some bedrooms have private balconies - children will need to be supervised on them. There is a spiral staircase from the first to second floor with no stairgate. The pool is set away from the house, accessed via a stone passageway, and is gated. A private chef can prepare local Tuscan dishes with organic food on request. There is private parking. Car rental strongly recommended. TV sat, air conditioning and laundry facilities included.

About the Location

The villa is in Montecatini Alto, an ancient Tuscan village in the heart of the Montecatini Terme area. The town is medieval with typical rocky houses surrounding Piazzetta Giusti, the main square, with its typical shops, wine-bars, and little restaurants. The village overlooks Montecatini Terme, known as Italy’s largest spa town. The area is between Florence and Pisa (30 km to each city); the Chianti and Maremma areas can be reached in under an hour, as can ski area Abetone. The closest airport is in Pisa, around 45 minutes away.

Accommodation Details

This 7-bedroom, 5-bathroom villa has a frescoed living room, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor, along with a studio and library full of art and history-oriented books. The garden has a swimming pool, accessed through a rocky tunnel. There are 4 double bedrooms on the first floor, some which share bathrooms and others with ensuite bathrooms. There is a spiral staircase from the first floor to the tower, which has a further bedroom and bridge room. There is also an underground taverna with a laundry room and 2 studio bedrooms with a private bathroom.

Style Notes

Elegant and refined. The building dates to the end of the 1800s, with wide inner lounges and details including wide windows and frescos. Bedrooms are named after the Verdi heroines, Violetta, Elisabetta, Amelia and Leonora included. Ceilings are high, and beds are draped with a romantic curtain. We love the beautiful Liberty-inspired garden, the grand yet comfortable living spaces and the views of the Tuscan countryside from the pool.

Montecatini Terme, Tuscany

Italy’s biggest spa town

Midway between Florence and Pisa, Montecatini Therme is the biggest spa town in Italy. Take the funicular to view the ancient village of Montecatini Alto from the top, book into one of the many spas for swimming and pampering, and enjoy one of the many local festivals. Florence and Pisa are only 30km away for a cultural day trip if you need respite from all that relaxation.
