Perks for the Parents

This 1-bedroom apartment near Lake Washington is in a neighborhood of historic homes, lush parks, and easy public transportation to downtown tourist sites. New and freshly appointed, it has a well-equipped full kitchen and separate sleeping areas making it possible to put the kids down early and enjoy movies or a glass of wine on the garden porch. From urban hiking trails to the lake, community gardens, fun and whimsical playgrounds, and family-friendly restaurants like Mioposto and Heyday, there is plenty for families to enjoy.

Why Kids Love it

This cozy garden apartment is great for all ages. The owners live upstairs and have 2 children under 10, offering a great opportunity for backyard play dates and wonderful neighborhood park and family-oriented recommendations. The home is a short walk from a sandy lake beach with a summer lifeguard, a newly remodeled playground, and several family-friendly restaurants nearby. The hosts offer a range of child-friendly amenities ranging from a baby monitor to a pack’n’play and lightweight stroller.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. By law, short term rentals in Seattle are subject to a 10.1% tax charge in addition to the nightly rate. Your host will communicate with you directly to collect the tax to finalize your reservation. Access to the garden apartment is down a flight of stairs; the property is otherwise on 1 level. The apartment is mostly childproof, although there is a glass-topped desk in the TV area. Note there is no washer-dryer. Child-friendly amenities are available upon request: pack’n’play, high chair, lightweight umbrella stroller, books, toys, baby bath, plastic utensils, plates and cups, and a baby monitor to name a few. Car rental useful but not essential.

About the Location

Mt. Baker is a classic warm and welcoming urban neighborhood featuring views of Mt. Rainier, easy access to Lake Washington, numerous Olmstead Brothers-designed parks, and easy access to downtown and the airport. The residence is 25 minutes from Sea Tac Airport, 1 block from the 14 bus stop (straight to downtown, or the transit center) and a 15-minute walk to the Mt. Baker Light Rail station. Parking is easy and plentiful nearby.

Accommodation Details

This garden apartment is a 1 bedroom private mother-in-law apartment (accommodating 4 in beds, 5 including pack’n’play) in the host’s primary residence. The 775 sq ft apartment features a living area with a king trundle bed/dining nook/full kitchen, a private full bathroom with bathtub, shower and towels, a comfortable living room/TV room with a desk nook, and a private bedroom with a queen bed, dimmable lights, and large internet TV. There is a shared covered patio overlooking the garden terrace.

Style Notes

Modern and fresh. Although the home was built in 1916, this garden apartment was constructed in 2016 and features a fresh, open kitchen with wooden countertops, inviting master bedroom, and decor featuring vintage northwest prints with stylish international decor interspersed for flair and comfort. Prints and canvases by local artists help us feature some of the hosts’ favorite things about Seattle. We love the clever use of space, fine city location and contemporary kitchen for easy family meals.

After many years of travel and living abroad, we settled in Seattle almost 15 years ago. My husband Chris and I have two young kids, and as they get older, we've been doing more traveling and are looking forward to the adventures to come. We spent 9 weeks traveling to Italy, Turkey, NYC and Costa Rica this year and look forward to trips to Mexico, England and Iceland in 2017. We love Seattle food, wine and outdoor activities. Happy to share some of our favorites with you! Our kids, 4 and 6 year old boys, are always thrilled when we host families with kids!

Mount Baker, Seattle

Waterfront living with mountain views

This desirable southeast Seattle neighborhood sits along Lake Washington with waterfront parks and views of Mount Baker in the distance. It’s a quiet neighborhood with easy transport links to the city. Rent bikes to cycle Lake Washington Boulevard, which is car-free on Sundays, play in Genesee Park and visit in summer for free concerts in Mount Baker park.
