Perks for the Parents

This beautiful 3-story home dates to the early 1900s and is directly behind the Museumplein in central Amsterdam. It’s a fantastic location and has inspiring modern interior design, using a palette of greys and whites and a dash of New York style - from subway signs to a wall map of the city. Light pours in through the floor to ceiling windows and there is even a wooden swing in the lounge. Close to museums and tram lines, it's a beautiful property in an easy destination for a family.

Why Kids Love it

The house is full of books and toys and is very welcoming for kids. There are 2 nursery rooms, one with a crib, and the other with a bunk bed and junior/toddler bed, plus books and toys and views of trees. The garden offers an extra space to play, and there is a playroom in the basement with kids table, play kitchen, pram and toys. The location makes it easy to explore the city without having to drive or jump on public transport - bikes are a great way to get around as a family.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. The door to the balcony in the master bedroom can be locked for safety. There are stair gates - note that stairs in Amsterdam are typically steep. There is a large family bathroom with shower and tub. On request, 2 additional single mattresses and a kingsize airbed can also be used. There is no need for car rental - the owners offer their bakfiets cargo bike (for up to 3 kids and 1 adult) plus 2 adult bikes and 2 toddler bikes. Note that there is no TV.

About the Location

The residence is in the Museumkwartier of central Amsterdam. It is a great child-friendly area and is quiet at night. It is really close to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum - a unique combination of being smack in the middle of things yet family friendly and quiet. The house is 15 minutes from Amsterdam Schipol airport by car/taxi or 7 minutes by train. Trams and trains in the city are highly reliable.

Accommodation Details

The home is laid out over 3 floors, with a double bedroom and large playroom in the basement. The ground floor has a kitchen, a lounge with fireplace and wooden swing, toilet and access to the garden. Upstairs, the master bedroom has a small balcony and a double bed. There are 2 nursery rooms, one with a crib, and the other with a bunk bed and junior/toddler bed. There is a study on the top floor with a printer and workspace.

Style Notes

European chic. If you like modern Dutch-Danish design, greys, whites and browns, this is the residence for you. There is a sleek kitchen with white crockery and pots of herbs, and the playful living space offers an area to play and relax. The garden is a great place to relax after a day in the city, with a deck, dining table, sofa and chairs and a string of fairy lights. We love the swing, the playroom and the great location - central yet quiet and family-friendly.

We had a wonderful week's stay. The house is lovely and the patio, too. It was a great base for our family of four - two boys, aged 5 and 8. They played with the Lego and building blocks for hours. We used the bikes everyday to tour the city, which was so much fun (made easier with Google maps). A great location within walking distance to the Rijksmuseum, wide open space for kicking balls and fun playgrounds. Marja recommended many local restaurants - we enjoyed them all.

We had a wonderful stay at the wouwerman residence. The location is excellent as public transport is readily available and can take you to multiple destinations within Amsterdam as well as outside. There is plenty to do walking distance from the residence and there are plenty of bars, cafe's and restaurants in the neighbourhood. The only downside we experienced in terms of location was the vast amount of roadworks in the area, which results in some noise in the master bedroom and some diversions if you were to drive or take a taxi. The residence itself is great for young children as there are many toys available and space to play. Playroom in the basement is wonderful. For parents who enjoy watching tv after the kids are off to sleep will have to bring Ipads or other devices as there is no TV in the residence.

This place is impeccable. The decor is just stunning - the pictures don't quite do the place justice. The location is optimal - steps away from the museums, Vondelpark, great restaurants and cafes and grocery stores, and the tram stop (which takes you all over town). The toys they have are all so fun and intelligent - our toddler could entertain herself for hours at end. The bed is so comfortable - firm and wonderful. The neighbors are all incredibly friendly, warm and helpful. We biked around with the provided bikes, and had so much fun. The unit itself was squeaky clean, including each toy. It was so convenient having a lovely kitchen to cook in and also having a W/D. We were so sad to leave the place.

We had a incredible stay at the Wouwermanstraat Residence. The location couldn't be more convenient to the Museum Quarter. It's on multiple tram lines and the airport bus drops off almost directly in front of the house, yet the street itself is quiet and delightful. The house is as gorgeous as the photos, if not better, and the backyard was a delight. If it's helpful, the room set up has changed slightly since the original photos: one of the kid rooms now has bunk beds in it -- perfect for our boys. There's also an additional 1/2 bath on the main floor that I hadn't noticed in the write-up. Marja left great tips and recommendations for babysitting, family-friendly restaurants and activities. I can't say enough good things about our stay. Thank you!

Museumkwartier, Amsterdam

The city’s cultural heartland

In the south of central Amsterdam, the Museum Quarter is the city’s cultural hothouse, including the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum among its treasures. It’s super well connected by tram to the city at large and is close to the Vondelpark for tots who prefer play to paintings.
