Perks for the Parents

This child-proofed classic New Orleans home is in the center of the city’s vibrant and eclectic Bywater neighborhood, walking distance from Frenchman Street and includes plenty for the kids. The common area offers a built in stereo system, smart TV, and bar area with separate drink refrigerator, great after a day’s sightseeing. There is a beautiful, spacious master bathroom with 2 sinks, large walk in shower and soaking footed tub. The location makes it easy to explore the city as a family: there are plenty of great bars and restaurants nearby for a parents' night out and the property is walking distance the St. Claude arts district, where non-commercial galleries are run by local artist collectives.

Why Kids Love it

This child-proofed house is great for those with young children, and includes toys and books that kids under 5 will love. There are ride-on toys in the backyard, along with a sandbox, and there is a toddler-sized table and chairs inside. The layout allows plenty of open space for kids to move around, and there is a separate closable kids space with a second TV. There are 2 Stokke Tripp Trapp high chairs in the dining space - one that is suitable for infants who are sitting up on their own. A pack’n’play, rock-n-play, and infant play gym can be provided on request. There are 2 wonderful parks within 2 blocks - one large park along the Mississippi River (great for strolling), and one smaller park with a playground suitable for those under 13.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. The house is all one level but there are 3 stairs leading into the front door. Car rental is useful but not essential with reliable public transport options nearby and a lot of walkable attractions from the residence. There are plenty of family-friendly coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance or a short drive/bike ride away. A sofa bed and air bed are available for further guests.

About the Location

The residence is in the center of New Orleans' vibrant and eclectic Bywater neighborhood. It is about 1.5 miles from the historic French Quarter and about 1 mile from Frenchman street, which is packed with great local music venues. There is a fairly dependable bus line in walking distance and there are 2 streetcar lines into the French Quarter about 1 mile away. New Orleans airport is a 30-minute drive away.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths and is set over 1 floor. There is a fully-equipped and updated kitchen open to large dining and living area, plus a separate laundry room. Bedrooms all have ensuite bathrooms and comprise 1 with queensize bed, 1 with double bed and 1 with a toddler bed/standard single bed. A moveable crib sleeps a child up to the age of 2. All full bathrooms have a bathtub and shower. There is a backyard and small patio with a table and chairs.

Style Notes

Classic New Orleans. This traditional Creole double shotgun was joined into one house about 3 years ago and is packed with character. There are 12-foot ceilings throughout the house, making all the spaces feel open and bright, and 8 (non-working) fireplaces with exposed brick chimneys throughout the house adding a sense of history. We love the beautiful shuttered exterior, the antique and vintage furniture, and the backyard strung with lights for magical evenings.

I am an artist, educator, and mother of 2 little ones. My husband and I moved to New Orleans to start our family and immerse ourselves in the rich culture and history of this city. We love it here - it is an amazing place to raise kids. But we also love adventure and travel and want to expose our kids to as many diverse experiences as possible throughout their lives.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Beignets, jazz and streetcar tours

This rich city has so much to offer families it’s hard to know where to start. Beyond its impressive architecture and inspiring musical heritage, it’s got fantastic food (beignets, anyone?), zoos, aquariums and a slew of superb museums. You can try Mardi Gras costumes on at the Mardi Gras Museum, explore voodoo at the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum or pilot a tugboat at the Louisiana Children’s Museum. Explore the city by streetcar or steamboat, visit alligator swamps and haunted mansions, or just dig into plates of insanely delicious food and enjoy the ride.
