Perks for the Parents

With 3 acres of gardens, its own private sandy beach and enough room to comfortably sleep 16 + 1, this sensational North Fork house, 5 miles from Greenport, has facilities to entertain everyone, from tennis courts to a spa/hammam with jacuzzi. The house is beautifully decorated with large windows letting in plenty of light. It is surrounded by 3 acres of perennial gardens and preserved beachfront forest, with a 100-acre nature reserve with miles of trails next to the private sandy beach. The house itself has a chef’s kitchen, long dining table for a family feast and 7 spacious light-filled bedrooms. The library wing has a more private bedroom and bathroom ideal for a nanny.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love this house. It is set up well for all ages - a crib is available on request along with a high chair and baby monitor for younger tots, and older kids can run wild in the large garden. There are swings, ride on toys, playhouses, slides and more, including a tennis and basketball court, beach toys, bicycles and a paddleboard. The native forest bordering the miles of beach is magical, full of birds, and is one of the last original forested areas on the North Fork. The private sandy beach is perfect for swimming and sandcastle building. The library has kids books and movies for all ages. Greenport itself offers boat trips, a carousel, a skate park and a cinema.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 week. No pets, no smoking. This is a single story house with no stairs to worry about. A cleaner is happy to come help out as much as you want to make your stay more restful - consult with the host for further details. Note that there is a long driveway leading to the house, with a fairly busy road at the end of it, so children should not play beyond the tennis court in case they wander. Strollers, high chairs and cribs available on request. WiFi, cable and Apple TV are all provided along with a DVD player and library.

About the Location

The house is on the Long Island Sound, with views to Connecticut, 5 minutes from Greenport, a picturesque fishing village with excellent shops, restaurants and activities for old and young. Amazing fresh seafood, and many organic farms and acclaimed vineyards are nearby. It is close to the several other quaint villages on North Fork. Expect beautiful beaches, nature preserves, farm-to-table food culture, and a tranquil pace of life. Greenport is easy to reach via train, the Jitney, or by car, being around 2- 2.5 hours from New York City.

Accommodation Details

This single-story 7-bedroom residence has a great room with long dining table and lounge, a kitchen with Viking and SubZero appliances, a library, playroom, laundry room and outdoor kitchen and fireplace. Each bedroom is ensuite, some with bathtubs, and all bedrooms sleep 2 - 1 with king bed, 4 with queen beds, 1 with 2 twin beds and 1 with a full/double bed. There is an additional sofa bed in the lounge and a crib can be added. The property is set on an estate with 3 acres of gardens and beachfront forest, a tennis and basketball court and a private sandy beach next to a 100 acres nature reserve with miles of trails.

Style Notes

Contemporary and nature-focused. A modern architectural wonder, this post and beam house is huge, around 6000sq ft, very bright, with an expansive garden and patio areas designed by a noted local landscaper. The furniture is comfortable with antiques and modern items mixed in with designer icons. We love the pine-clad bedrooms, the double height living space and the enormous windows making for sunny spaces throughout.

North Fork, Long Island

Simple country pleasures

Beachcombing, messing about in boats, dangling a line off the pier… all the deliciously wholesome fun of your fondest childhood vacations can be found in this New York summer outpost, where nature meets high society, with designer malls and privet-hedged mansions sitting happily alongside clapboard cottages, bike-dotted boardwalks and tousled dunes. North Fork is a little more low key than the Hamptons but with much of the same appeal - surrounded by the ocean and with pretty towns to visit filled with boutiques and waterfront restaurants.
