In Udon Thani in northeast Thailand, the Prachak Residence is a genuine cultural experience, sleeping up to 6 in 3 double bedrooms. Run by a Thai family with four children, every whim is catered for. Want to go field mouse hunting? Ride a Thai Tractor? Learn to drive a Tuk Tuk? Ride a local buffalo? All these and more can be arranged. The residence itself is roomy and is arranged around a private saltwater pool and a 60,000sqm tropical garden full of banana, papaya and mango trees. There may not be a beach nearby, but this is an unique opportunity to experience the real Thailand with a local host and you won’t miss it one bit.

Northeast Thailand, Thailand

Off the tourist track

If you want to get to know the real Thailand, away from resorts, backpacker shacks and ‘the land of smiles’ marketing brochures, head to the northeast. This rural farming region, also called Isan/Isaan, lets you discover Thailand's natural beauty off the beaten track. Go river rafting with the kids, visit hill tribes and buy local handicrafts to take home. Delight your transport-mad tots by traveling by pedal-rickshaw, or even elephant. Grab a map and a guidebook - this location rewards independent exploration and a spirit of adventure.
