Perks for the Parents

This astonishing warehouse-style home is in a former school and includes indoor swings, a tree house, a garden and plenty of quirks. An inspiring, unique home, it is filled with art and design details, from a head sculpture in the garden to a free-standing bath in the master bedroom, and tropical-looking plants throughout. The apartment has heated floors in all bedrooms and bathrooms and WiFi throughout. There is a workspace on the mezzanine level overlooking the main living space. The east-central location makes a stay in the city easy: there are parks and museums a short walk away, and the Dappermarkt is around the corner along with plenty of cafés and restaurants.

Why Kids Love it

Your children will remember a stay here as long as they live: this fairy tale paradise includes indoor swings, bedrooms filled with toys, the gym elements of the former school and a lot of space to play. There is a special play and read space and the living room is large enough for wheeled toys. There are also parks and playgrounds nearby, along with the Artis Zoo and the Nemo Science Museum. The owners have 2 small children and the house is well set up and safe and suitable for small and bigger children, with plenty of toys, a crib and 2 toddler beds. There is a dedicated children's bedroom with sleigh bed and a separate nursery room attached to a bedroom with kingsize bed.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. Along with stairs there is an elevator from the ground floor to the second floor. Extra services including babysitting, cooks and housekeeping can be arranged on request. The hosts provide a handout all about the neighbourhood, including favorite hotspots, tourist-traps and other super useful information. No smoking inside (there is a roof terrace where smoking is permitted); no drugs or parties allowed. There are some hazards for younger children: please note that all the stairs are very steep and that some bedrooms are at the top of them; some stairs are open tread. Stair gates are provided. Parents must supervise their children on the swings and in the treehouse. There are breakables at child-height - children must be supervised around them. The roof garden is child safe.

About the Location

The residence is in the Oosterparkbuurt district of Amsterdam, just east of the city center. It is easily reached by cab or Uber from Schiphol Airport, a 15-minute drive away, with all the museums and canals easily reached by public transport, taxi or Uber. Car rental not essential: public transport is fantastic in the neighborhood and Uber is reliable. The local area is vibrant, family-friendly and upcoming with the Artis Zoo, the Oosterpark and the Nemo Science Museum very close by. It is also close to the Tropenmuseum that has special children programs that are great fun and educative at the same time. There are supermarkets and all kinds of local stores across the neighborhood.

Accommodation Details

This 2-story townhouse apartment has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a roof garden terrace with views over the city. The house was a former school, and the living area is in the former gym, with an open kitchen with Nespresso machine, fruit juicer, dishwasher and Viking stove and ovens. There is a workspace on the mezzanine above the kitchen. All 3 bedrooms are on the first floor and have ensuite bathrooms with bath and shower. The master bedroom has a roll top bath and kingsize bed, the second bedroom has a small nursery area and kitchenette with stairs up to a mezzanine with kingsize bed, and the third bedroom has a kingsize bed and 2 toddler beds. There is a 70sqm rooftop terrace accessed from the living area by stairs.

Style Notes

Play-centric. Built in a former school this townhouse is utterly unique. The living room has 6m high ceilings and 7 enormous windows overlooking the street on one side and gardens on the other; the natural light is wonderful. The design furniture and gym equipment, including swings and ladders, add special touches. Bedrooms are designed in a quirky, one-off style - the master bedroom has faux fur throws and a roll top bath; the kids room has a treehouse and the second bedroom has a bed on the upper mezzanine and quiet sleeping space for the baby. We love the art and stained glass windows, the reclaimed wood in the kitchen areas and the delightful, retro and design-led creative touches everywhere you look.

We are a young family that love traveling. We prefer homes over hotels, as it is so much easier with little children. We are planning quite an extensive trip in the near future and would love to share our home with you while away. Hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. Amsterdam is a wonderful city to explore with our heaven as a base.

Oosterparkbuurt, Amsterdam

Vibrant and multicultural

Approximately 10 minutes from Old Town by car or taxi, Oosterparkbuurt is close to the city’s major tourist attractions but maintains an authentic, residential atmosphere. Take in a concert at the park’s bandstand, meet butterflies, penguins and elephants at Artis Royal Zoo, or search for treasures at the Dappermarkt, named one of the top 10 shopping streets in the world by National Geographic.
