Perks for the Parents

This classic Danish townhouse is well set-up for a family stay, with a full kitchen, front and back garden, BBQ and plenty of space for children. Enjoy the morning sun in the front garden and afternoon sun in the private back garden. The location in upmarket, family-friendly Østerbro offers cafés and shops within a short walk plus the waterfront and city center museums a longer walk or short cycle away. The Little Mermaid is a 7-minute bike ride or 25-minute walk away.

Why Kids Love it

The home has plenty of toys and books (English, Spanish and Danish) for kids under 10, plus board and table games for older kids and grown-ups. The house has an open living room with TV and toys, bright and colorful children’s bedrooms and plenty of equipment for younger tots, including a crib, high chair, stroller, baby/toddler bath and baby toys. It is a short walk to local playgrounds; the house is on a narrow street where kids can play, and it has a playhouse in the middle of it.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights. The home has steep stairs with no stairgate, and there is no bathtub, only a shower (as typical in Denmark); there is a baby bath. One of the bedrooms is in the bright attic with a staircase leading from the living room. There is parking in front of the house and nearby but is first come first serve basis and you have to pay all day (with different rates depending on the hour). Car rental is not advised or essential in the city, which has good public transit and is highly walkable. You can run or walk around the lakes, attend yoga and pilates studios nearby and cycle on safe bicycle lanes. Bikes are available for 2 adults ages 16 and up and 1 child age 5-10, and the owners have a Christiania cargo bike.

About the Location

The townhouse is in Østerbro, a central, family-friendly area just to the north of the city center. It is hard to find a more central location if you are looking for a house with a private garden. Cafés, restaurants and local shops are steps away, and it is a 7-minute walk to Kings Garden (Kongens Have & Rosenberg castle). Public transport is close by: it is a 13-minute walk to Osterpørt train station where you can get the fast train directly to the airport (approximately 20 minutes). Nearby you will find the botanical garden, Torvehallerne (a gourmet food market) and the city center.

Accommodation Details

This townhouse is set over 3 floors and has a private garden. It has a first floor with kitchen, dining room and toilet. The second floor has a double bedroom with doors to a children’s bedroom with single bed, and french doors to a nursery/toddler bedroom. The third floor has an open living room with a table and sitting area, a bathroom with shower and stairs to an attic with a kingsize bed. There is a private back garden and a front garden, both with seating, and an additional full bathroom with shower, washer and dryer in the basement.

Style Notes

Bright, light, modern and sophisticated. This original Kartoffelrækkerne (townhouse or potato row house) was built in the late 1800s and has been recently renovated. It includes modern designer furniture, paintings and playful color accents in the kids rooms. The kitchen has a built in oven/fireplace and there is an original fireplace in the living room along with wood beams and original wall details to add a dash of hygge. We love the cherubs in the nursery and the edgy modern art.

We are a family of 4, we speak English, Danish and Spanish daily in our household. Our base is Denmark but we spend most of our holidays in California, Mexico and the Canary islands. We are all about sun, hygge and good food.

Østerbro, Copenhagen

Green, design-focused and full of family appeal

The northeastern district of the city is classical, charming and full of elegant buildings and families eating a classic Scandinavian brunch on a Sunday. Shop upmarket boutiques on Østerbrogade, full of Danish design classics, play on the new beach at Svanemøllen or in Fælledparken, the country’s largest park, and rent bikes to cycle round Copenhagen’s city lakes. Buy a book of Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales for bedtime, and make a pilgrimage to the Little Mermaid on the waterfront before you leave.
