Perks for the Parents

This bright, family-friendly duplex apartment is in a fun, up and coming neighborhood 15 minutes' drive from the city center. With 2 dedicated children’s rooms, a family bathroom with tub, plenty of toys, books and plush animals throughout the house, and a large rooftop terrace, a young family will feel right at home. Family meals can easily be prepared in the open kitchen. Walk or cycle into the city: the Vondelpark and Museum Square are just 10-20 minutes away.

Why Kids Love it

Plenty of toys and books for kids under 7 are provided; this is a great family space. It is a short walk from local playgrounds and a petting zoo. The children’s bedrooms are bright and colorful and have changing tables, plush animals and child-sized furniture. The bigger kid’s room has a twin bed and a trundle, while the nursery room is suitable for a toddler (up to 4 years old) and has a toddler bed. A BabyBjorn travel crib, 2 Stokke high chairs, a baby monitor and children’s dinnerware are also available.

Things to Know

The apartment is on the third and fourth floors without an elevator. The roof terrace is gated and fenced but supervision for younger children is required. There are steep, open stairs as typical of Amsterdam houses, and they do not have a stair gate. There are no window guards and the apartment is high up - windows open at the top. Toddlers and babies will need to be supervised. Parking in Amsterdam is expensive and public transport or cycle hire is recommended. The tram stops 100m from house - tram 13 takes 10 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. No pets, no smoking. Smart TV, cable, Netflix and WiFi available.

About the Location

The residence is in the Hallenkwartier neighborhood of the Oud-West district of Amsterdam. This prestigious 19th century neighborhood, right next to the city center, is packed with unique shops, cafes and restaurants, a library, hotels and markets. The apartment is very close to the Hallen which includes a movie theater, food hall and several fab local shops. There are supermarkets around the corner, a local Saturday market and the daily ‘Ten Kate market.’ It is a 10-minute walk to the center, Anne Frank House, Jordaan, the ‘9 Straatjes' shopping area and the canals, and 15-20 minutes to the Vondelpark and Museum Square. Schiphol airport is 20-30 minutes away by taxi/public transport.

Accommodation Details

The duplex apartment has a main floor with a bathroom with shower, living room, dining with table seating 6-8 people, well equipped kitchen, 2 balconies, and an office/ bedroom with a fullsize sofa bed sleeping up to 2. On the top floor there are 3 bedrooms, a toilet, a bathroom with bathtub and walk-in shower, and stairs leading to the private roof terrace. These bedrooms comprise 1 with kingsize bed, 1 with a single bed and trundle and a nursery with a toddler bed, suitable for up to age 4. A travel crib is available. The residence has a private roof terrace with artificial turf, barbecue and picnic table.

Style Notes

Bright, clean and family-friendly. Renovated in 2010, this home has the charming touches of a typical Amsterdam residence: large windows, pine-look floors and mostly white walls. The roof terrace is particularly unusual, furnished with a picnic table and barbecue and laid with artificial turf to create a garden feel with rooftop views over the city. We love the high ceilings, oversized pendant light above the dining table and open shelving with books organized by color.

We are Che (German) and Melissa (Dutch) and we live with our two kids (5 and 3) in Amsterdam Oud-West. We met 11 years ago in Thailand where we both worked as dive instructors. We love travelling and we have been all over the world. Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Laos, New Zealand, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Tanzania, New York City... are some of the destinations we fell in love with and that we've visited before we had our kids. With kids we loved exploring Ibiza, Portugal, France, The Seychelles. We love living in Amsterdam. Our neighbourhood is the place to be: new restaurants, pubs and coffeeplaces everywhere. With De Hallen at the end of our streets we can even go to the cinema without leaving our neighborhood! We enjoy good food, so we go out for dinner often, but also love to cook.

Handsome houses and street markets

This area of the city is 10-minutes to the east of downtown and is known for its handsome houses, busy shopping streets and street markets. It's close to the Vondelpark and is a great place for a family, with good restaurants and terraces for people-watching. It's also known for having the highest concentration of coffee bars in the city.
