Perks for the Parents

This former merchant’s mansion on the corner of 2 of the quietest streets in the colonial town of Paraty is just a short walk from the dock for boats to the beaches and islands of the Bay of Paraty. Paraty is closed to motorized traffic, making this a great residence for those with kids; while central and convenient, it is also quiet. In the evening, the best restaurants and boutiques are just a short walk away along the charming cobblestone streets. With beautiful decor, from carvings and photography to native Amazon crafts and Matisse prints, and space to entertain in the sitting room connected to a dining room and large adjacent kitchen, it is a sophisticated villa.

Why Kids Love it

There is plenty of space in the villa for a family, and with Paraty’s pedestrianized streets and more on the doorstep it is an easy place to stay. Although there is no pool, the beach is a short walk away, as are the town’s child-friendly restaurants and shops. Boat trips can be arranged to the nearby islands and beaches on the Bay of Paraty - speed boats, crewed yachts, converted fishing boats and more can be arranged in advance or during your stay. Two bedrooms can be set up with twin beds instead of double to work for children. There are fantastic indoor and outdoor living/dining areas. Family meals are easy: the house comes with a cook.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. Some artworks and breakables may need to be moved out of the reach of young children. Note that the property is split across a main house with 3 bedrooms and a guest house with 2 bedrooms. Rates include a daily maid service and cook (Monday-Friday) and an English-speaking concierge. Additional cooks, maids, babysitters, barmen, and evening cover may be provided for an extra cost and paid for locally when requested in advance. A pre-arrival custom grocery shop is recommended. This means that you will arrive to a kitchen full of food, a fridge full of cold drinks and that the first meal can be served shortly after your arrival. Rates are exclusive of transfers, car rental, food and beverages and tips. Car rental is recommended to get the best of the destination and local area. The hosts can help arrange local car rental on arrival or before.

About the Location

Paraty is a lovely 17th century town that has been perfectly preserved thanks to a long period of isolation, and was declared a National Historical Monument in 1966. There are winding narrow cobblestone roads with small fishermen’s cottages and vast merchants mansions standing side by side, all white stucco with brightly painted shutters and doors. Vehicles are banned from the town, and the charming art galleries, shops, restaurants and bars tucked amongst the cobbled streets are best explored on foot. Paraty is equidistant between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, both of which can be reached in 3.5-4 hours by car. Private transfers with trusted drivers can be arranged from the airports in both Rio and São Paulo upon request. Paraty also has its own airport, which is about 10 minutes by car from the house, and helicopter and private plane charters are available upon request.

Accommodation Details

The house has 5 bedrooms spread between the main structure and a guest house extending along 1 side of a private walled garden. All 5 bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with showers, ceiling fans and air-conditioning. The main structure has 3 double bedrooms, and the further 2 guest house bedrooms that are accessed through the garden can be set up with either double or twin beds. There is a large kitchen, a separate dining room seating 10 and a spacious lounge leading to an outdoor veranda with dining and seating areas. The gardens are filled with native fruit, coconut palm trees, and collection of orchids, which lend the house its name.

Style Notes

The current owner bought the house as a crumbling pousada and immediately set about a meticulous restoration of the property which was then furnished by period pieces shipped from Paris, including art-nouveau carrera marble coffee tables in the sitting room and an 18th century mahogany dining table for 10 guests. Rare tribal headdresses sourced from the Brazilian Amazon and original black and white portrait photography by Richard Avedon add colour and flair. The sitting room opens onto a tiled outdoor veranda with lots of dining and sitting space, great for enjoying breakfast, relaxing, or admiring the lush tropical garden.

Paraty, Brazil

Luxury meets hippy chic

Sink your feet into fine white sands, thwack through the rainforest, and island hop to your heart’s content: this is life in bright and colorful Paraty, a colonial town with pedestrianized streets, eco-attitudes and a cosmopolitan flavour on the lush green Costa Verde corridor between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in southeast Brazil.
