The Old King Barn & Cottage
Perks for the Parents
Retreat to this one-of-a-kind artists’ barn and renovated cottage surrounded by nature and trees in peaceful Peconic, New York. It sleeps 5. Parents with an eye for art and design will love the history of this property: in the late 1900s, the American Impressionist painters Edith and Henry Prellwitz lived here and painted from the barn. This unique space has soaring ceilings and huge north-facing windows to capture the ideal light for painting, while the separate cottage is south facing and drenched in sunlight, finished with French doors leading out to the beautiful courtyard dining area and courtyard garden. Both the cottage and the barn are rented together as one property, within quiet tranquil surroundings and just minutes from a quiet beach.
Why Kids Love it
This is a truly unique escape and a place where kids’ imaginations can run wild. They’ll love learning about the artistic history of the house, and they can even try some of their own creations during their stay - there’s an artist’s sink in the studio barn for art and design projects. It’s a very special place in the moonlight, and an amazing spot for stargazing due to the rural location. There's a quiet beach just down the lane and for family trips, there are recreational courts and sports tracks in walking distance. The Long Island Aquarium is less than half an hour away for trips further afield.
Things to Know
Minimum stay: 2 weeks. The cottage is located on the grounds of a larger farmhouse, which is also available to rent separately. Each property has its own private outdoor area and the cottage has its own gravel driveway and entrance. Cottage guests do not have access to the swimming pool in the farmhouse garden. The hosts usually stay at the farmhouse when the cottage is booked so they will be on hand should you need anything during your break. There is plenty of parking outside the property and car rental is recommended.
About the Location
This residence is located in the peaceful hamlet of Peconic, between Cutchogue and Southold on the North Fork, NY. The town of Greenport is 12 minutes away and Peconic Jitney Stop is a 10-minute walk. This area has lots of organic farms stands and foodie places to eat, while North Fork wineries are just 20 minutes’ drive. It’s also close to home stores in Southold. The stand-out spots in this area are the beaches: about 3 minutes' drive or 15 min walk is the secluded Indian Neck Lane Beach at Richmond Creek. A short drive or 20 minute bike ride will bring you to other beaches at the end of South Harbor Road or Nassau Point Road Beach (which has a lifeguard). Beach permits can usually be purchased at Southold Town. Recreational courts and sports tracks are right down Peconic Lane, and Long Island Aquarium is less than half an hour away. Peconic is just under 2 hours from JFK or LaGuardia airports. There is also ferry service to Connecticut, Shelter Island, and Sag Harbor in town.
Accommodation Details
The accommodation consists of a cottage, which includes a bedroom (with a queensize bed and single bed), a full bathroom, and a kitchen, as well as the artists’ studio barn (which has a double sofabed and half bathroom). The airy and light filled ‘Great Room’ is repurposed from an art and design studio to be a contemporary and comfortable open plan living space. It was renovated with air conditioning and heating updates in 2020, plus a Stuv Modern wood burning insert to a historical fireplace, to create a warm and relaxing ambience. The award-winning cottage is peaceful and calm, with views over the gardens and a courtyard herb garden. It was fully renovated in 2018, with a designer kitchen, shiplap clad walls and a full bathroom with a claw foot soaking tub.
Style Notes
Contemporary conversion. This residence has a chic, sophisticated and modern style which complements the original historical details: the award-winning barn renovation has been published several times in Hamptons Cottages and Gardens magazine, and The North Forker magazine. The barn and cottage are filled with unique features - there’s even a performance stage from the turn of the Century located in the ‘Great Room’ - and yet the uncluttered design details and an open plan layout anchor this contemporary living space. We love the inviting dark hue of the studio wall, the exposed ceiling beams of the A-frame barn structure, and the classic wall paneling in the cottage kitchen.
