Perks for the Parents

The Old King Farmhouse is a Victorian Italianate historical property with a heated saltwater pool in Peconic, New York - nestled between North Fork wineries, farms and beautiful beaches. It sleeps 9. Spend your days splashing in the pool, dining among beach pebbles and grasses in the beautiful gardens, hanging out under the shaded front porch, or relaxing in one of the small garden rooms. This is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy lazy days and warm summer nights. If you ever want to leave, the stand-out spots in this area are the beaches: it’s close to both Bay and Sound beaches, and one of the best (well-kept secret) beaches is located just at the end of the lane.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love the historical nature of this house, with its quirky layout, unique original features, and lots of different rooms to explore. It’s a very special place in the moonlight, and an amazing spot for stargazing. There is an art studio off the 4th bedroom for family art and craft projects, stocked with some supplies from the hosts’ Design business, Morgan & Kydd. Inside, there are lots of kids' books and family games (as well as a library full of art and design books), plus high speed internet and Apple and Cable TV for chill-out days. Outside, the garden has a large grass lawn and lots of shady trees to relax under, and they’ll never want to leave the saltwater pool (great for sensitive skins).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: Inquire as it varies. Safety notes: the pool area is fenced but this can be opened up if you are entertaining pool-side. There is ample parking at the property and car rental is recommended to explore the area. The hosts have a Peloton bike in the property, but do not have bicycles for guests to borrow - it’s a great bike ride to the beach so feel free to bring your own or rent them locally. The hosts also own a cottage within the farmhouse grounds that will not be accessible during stays. Each house has its own private outdoor space and the pool is only accessible for guests in the farmhouse. The hosts usually stay in the cottage when the farmhouse is booked, so they’ll be on hand if you need anything during your stay.

About the Location

This residence is located in the peaceful hamlet of Peconic, between Cutchogue and Southold in the North Fork of Long Island, New York. It’s just under 2 hours from JFK or LaGuardia airports. From here there is a ferry service to Connecticut, Shelter Island, and Sag Harbor. Greenport is 12 minutes away and Peconic Jitney Stop is a 10-minute walk. This area has lots of organic farms stands and foodie places to eat, while North Fork wineries are just minutes away. It’s also close to home stores in Southold. About 3 minutes' drive or 15 min walk is the secluded Indian Neck Lane Beach at Richmond Creek. A short drive or 20 minute bikeride will bring you to other beaches at the end of South Harbor Road or Nassau Point Road Beach (which has a lifeguard). Beach permits can usually be purchased at Southold Town. For family trips, there are recreational courts and sports tracks right in Peconic Lane, and Long Island Aquarium is less than half an hour away.

Accommodation Details

The farmhouse has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. The primary bedroom features a kingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom. The remaining 3 guest rooms all have queensize beds and the hosts also have 1 airbed available for extra guests. There is a beautiful light-filled living room, a relaxing drawing room/library, and a wood-paneled garden room. The chic neutral kitchen features a Thermador side-by-side refrigerator/freezer and there is also a Miele washer/dryer. Outside, there is a 36' x 14' heated saltwater pool with contemporary fencing and modern outdoor furniture for dining or lounging. The beautiful gardens also feature a fenced vegetable and cutting garden for guests to enjoy during their stay.

Style Notes

Characterful chic. In the late 1900s, the American Impressionist painters Edith and Henry Prellwitz lived at the house and painted from the historical barn, now named Owl Hollow Barn (and also available for rent separately). The award-winning barn renovation has been published several times in Hamptons Cottages and Gardens magazine, and The North Forker magazine. The house is filled with lots of original details and charm, with designer furniture and antiques highlighted by classic white farmhouse interiors. Contemporary details and a neutral color palette blend simplicity and modernity, adding a chic touch to the historical features without losing character. We love the parquet flooring in the living areas, the stunning curved bay window, and the enveloping deep hues of the main bedroom.

My family and I moved from Manhattan to The Old King Farmhouse in 2017, to follow our dream of renovating our historical property and launching the Lifestyle Brand, Morgan & Kydd . Our home is a blend of original historical features, antiques, comfortable furnishings, object d'arts from travels and vintage stores and lots of books . We hope you enjoy the peaceful & relaxing environment and enjoy the wonder of being surrounded by nature . Rising early with the sunrise, sipping a beverage of choice and listening to the morning awaken, is one of my favorite times at the Farmhouse . We hope you find your stay a special time too . Enjoy !

We had a great stay at the Farmhouse. It is beautifully decorated, thoughtfully laid out and very comfortable. The kids had fun in the pool and we were a short walk to the beach. The house is also ideally located to explore the North Fork. Rachel was great—she had a lot of amazing recommendations for the area and was very helpful. Overall one of the best vacation homes we have ever stayed in and already talking about coming back. Thank you Rachel!

This is a beautiful and charming old house. Love the location and the layout works great for families that want to do different things but not be too far from each other. Kids will want to spend the whole day in the pool. This was a great stay for our family of 5. Thank you Rachel!
